OK, you people have cost me a bunch since getting into this casting/swaging addiction - I'm doing .45's, .38's and have decided I need to put some together for the "thutty thutty". And need to stay on the cheap side, thus Lee. Which mold and what load for fun shooting(but accurate) and are the cast boolits good 'nuff for whitetails at 50-75 yards ? I have pure lead, wheelweight alloy both, and access to some lino iffen need be. Be nice if same boolit could be satisfactorily sized for some other .30's too.(SKS, 1917?)

Thanks, George

I've had great results from the Lee C309-150-F and 15.5 grains of Alliant 2400 in the .30/30.

I've shot a fair amount of the C309-113-F , C309-150F and the C309-170F. Also killed a deer with the 309-170 !

Another thought for you might be the Ranch Dog 311-165GC which is made by Lee and can be had from Ranch Dog's website ;
www.ranchdogmolds.com

By no means am I trying to talk you out of the two Lee standard offerings however I just like the Ranch Dog mold more !

I think you can probably get the standard Lee offerings for about $20 and the RD mold is $26 plus shipping !

For powder with the Lee or RD bullets I pretty much only use SR4759 and XMP5744 !

If your shooting a bolt gun or a contender the lee c312-155-2R has worked real well for me.

For a levergun, the Lee C309-170F casts, essentially, the same as the Lyman 31141 (or 311041, depending upon the vintage of your mould) and, over about 20-22gr of AA5744 should produce somewhere around 1800 fps (+/-) from a 20" barrel. A young fellow I'm been sorting of mentoring in casting and reloading had been using 31141s that I'd given him in his M94 and, and when he began casting his own, switched to Lee 170s without changing anything else...avg. velocity within 25 fps and same POI.

I started with the Lee C309-170F for no other reason then the mold was inexpensive . Later I went to the 311041 which I liked a bit better . Next I came into a 311041HP mold wich I like alot , that mold got me started sizing all my 30-30 bullets at .312" .

I've tried the RCBS and Saeco 150 grain molds as well as Lee's 150 grain mold and I like them all !

However in the past couple years I have shot maybe 2500 of the Ranch Dog 311-165GC bullets with excellent results . Granted most of these were shot at metalic silhouettes , but still quite a few were shot at paper . I am sorry to say I have yet to try this bullet on deer . But I just so happen to have and old Glenfield 36G set up with a old Wevaer K2.5 and this bullet for the upcoming season .

I have the Lee 150 FN mold, and have had very good luck with it in all the .30 caliber rifles that I've used it in. For hunting, other .30 caliber molds have a larger meplat which I think is important though I certainly would shoot a deer with the Lee 150 at 1800fps or more cast from air cooled ww if that's what I had.

I use both the lee 170F GC and the Lyman 311041 boolits and they both work extreamly well. In fact I would really like to get either boolit in a six cavity mold to speed up production. I use them in every 30 cal rifle I shoot including 30-30, 308 win, 30-06, 7.62X54, and 7.5 X 55

Does Lee have one that is close to the RCBS 30-180-RN? They shoot real good in my 336.

I've shot the Lee C309-160 R for years out of my 30-30 and 30/06, and it's very accurate in my rifles. I just bought a Ranch Dog TLC 311 -165 RF that I've cast but haven't shot any yet. I did get some loaded up in my '06.
