I just picked a Lyman 457406 mold off of fleabay. How effective is it shooting it without the gas check? I imagine my shoulder would give up before the alloy does...

I take it the .451 diameter would be the correct one?

Nobody here shots them without a gas check?

Well then, is .451 the correct gas check size? That's the closest I saw at midway

Hi Don!
If this is a rifle bullet (indicated by the "457" in the 457406,) then you need a .458 gas check. I get mine at Sage's Outdoors. (https://www.sagesoutdoors.com/458-rifle-caliber-gator-gas-checks/) BTW, to answer your original question, if you aren't screaming the bullets, you should be able to shoot them "barefooted" without too much trouble, as long as you watch your velocity. Hope this helps. Ed
