Just got my 44 HBWC mold. Haven't poured any except a few pure lead due to mold fever. Plan on pouring a few hundred Sat. Need advice on both alloy and powder. Never poured HBs bigger than 38cal. In HB mode they will be for S&W 24 target loads. Any advice on this appreciated.

I can't help with the cast but I do use Penn 185 gr. DEWC, I missed weight you have at first.

So far I have used AA#2, 3.6-4.0gr., AA#5, 6.1-6.7gr. and Trail Boss, 4.3-6.3. For some reason I don't have where I got this from, bad mistake on my part.

GP 100 kinda favors the AA#5 but does well with all, the Bulldog is leaning to the AA#2 for some reason.

I don't know why 44 wc is not hardly published information. Even the Lyman Cast #4 does not list 44 wc, all kinds of 38 but not 44.

I hope you get some real help and it is a good round for knocking around.

Take care

Try 4.5 grains of Red Dot or Bullseye, 5.0 grains of WW-231, or 5.2 grains of Unique. Red Dot has been the best one of the bunch for me, but all are pretty good.

Years ago I worked up target loads for a 624 using mp's 220gr cast hbwc's. When testing I seated the bullets flush, crimped iin the 1st lube groove, crimped in the bottom lube groove and lubes in 1 groove, 2 grooves along with tumble lube.

I testing those bullets/seating depths with clays powder with loads of 4.0gr/4.2gr/4.4gr.

At the end of the day the cast bullets sized to .431" using 8bhn/9bhn range scrap air cooled lubed with the 45/45/10 & crimped in the 1st/top lube groove using 4.4gr gr clays easily held the x-ring @ 25yds.
