I set out to put together a .30 XCB/.30x57 rifle based on a nice 1916 Mauser action and a takeoff 10" twist barrel. I have wanted to use this action for something and this cartridge seemed perfct: relatively easy to do without custom everything, easy to keep within pressure range of the action and no alterations required for feeding. I could do it on the cheap, shoot boolits from it and be content with what
the barrel would do. But then...
I was offered a barrel that was orphaned after it's threads were messed. It aeems this orphan is a "Palma" 14" twist, cut-rifled tube from a well known maker and the messed-up threads are big enough for it to be turned down to fit my reciever. Oh and from reading the maker's website info it seems that their .308 barrel in that configuration is a"tight" .298"/.3065". To this cheapskate the bore is amazing!
