Redfield mount and rings

I finally got a Redfield Base and rings for an Interarms MArk X I've had a while and went to mount it up today. Tightened the base down to the receiver, all is good. Took the front rings, assembled it together around a one inch diameter steel rod I use for this, put it in the base and began to turn it the required 90 degrees to lock it in. Seemed a little tight, I've mounted many of these before, but the bottom dove tail part of the ring sheered right off on me.

Now I'm back to waiting for another set of rings. I need to check the base carefully to make sure nothing on it was damaged. Really ticks me off and I have no idea what went wrong, these mounts are generally very high quality.

Never had that happen.

I like the Redfield system and the rings that the clamping screw comes up from underneath.
I've also put them on Leupold bases, and they went right on.

I have had that happen once before as well and it also was a 98 Mauser. I blamed it on mismatched manufacture dates or some such between the base and rings and the next set of rings worked like they should have. Since that happened, If they feel tighter than normal I stop and try another set of rings. I suspect the tenon was too tall and the base too thin so that the curve of the receiver jammed the works.

Put some grease on the front dovetail both ring and ring before you mount it. Make sure the base part of the ring is fully inside the dovetail before you turn it in, And work it back and forth to break it in. Of your not married to redfield rings Burris does sell their ZEE rings for redfield bases and comes with the inserts. I learned the grease thing from an older gunsmith. Frank

agree with the above, a light film of grease on the dovetail can make them turn in much easier.

Interesting, the rifle had weaver bases on it, but ran out of up and down travel with two different scopes so something was definitely off, could be they were the wrong bases, the rings were cheap aluminum ones. I can't tell from looking at it that anything is off, hopefully it's the bases or rings and not the receiver itself.

I like the Redfield bases and ring system too, but I also like the simplicity of those Weavers. Might just give that a try again
