My son want to use his Ruger BH in 45 Colt this year to take a deer. With short notice, I loaded three basic timeless loads using Unique powder and a 260 grain SWC from an Accurate mold I believe. For some reason he manages to pull one shot in each group of five. He liked load number three best. All were shot at 25 yards using a rest.

I would hunt with those. I would also label/index the cylinder with a pencil mark and shoot at 6 different spots on a target. That will make sure it isn't the gun.

My 45c hunting load is 8.5 of unique with a noe 280 wfn on top. It shoots lights out in my bh bisley and my 1894 marlin.

I was hardheaded, and it took years to find a good accurate load from mine. I ended up using the RCBS-270-SAA boolit. It was the best shooting boolit that I've found.

MT, that's a good idea. I will have to remember that.

That's how I found a problem in one of my S&W cylinders. I have a M28 that would put 4 into one hole and two flyers.

I eventually had the cylinders honed to a universal size. Now any misses are on me.

He is ready. You can easily double that distance for an effective range but no one is immune from buck fever when the deer presents it’s self. My standard full powder load for my Colt single actions is 9 grains unique and Lyman’s 454190 ( about 255 grains with my alloy) sized to .454. While I can plink a 18” metal plate at 100 yards, I personally would back that to 50-60 yards for hunting. If it were myself, I would get a target with a deer printed on it and move it out past 25 yards (50 yards) and see how the bullets print.
