8x57R LOAD HELP

As of today, I am the owner of a single shot rifle chambered in 8x57R. It is my understanding that it is basically the same as a rimless 8x57. (have I been mislead?) Just wondering about boolit choices. Probably going to be a plinker, but would consider hunting with it. Or mabey a truck gun. I tend to lean towards heavy boolits. Suggestions?

I have a JS thats a wonderful shooter with 4064 and a Sierra 175g. I have taken many deer with it. It shoots right at MOA with its WWII steel barrel.

You should slug the bore because there are J-.318" and S- .323" bore variants of the 8x57R just like the rimless 8x57.

Texas is right about slugging that bore first; for a .323 diameter bullet fired in a .318 bore won't do your rifle or you any good! There are all varieties of 8mm European cartridges that may require a "chamber cast" to get the right one. If it is in fact a 8X57 rimmed, it is probably a 8X57JR (.318 bore), or a 8X57JRS (.323 bore).

And if you have a number 7 RCBS shell holder and a set of 8x57 Mauser dies it is dead easy to form shooter 8x57R cases from .303 British.

Grafs has 8x57R ammo and brass available. I size .323 or .321 jacketed bullets down in a custom Lee .318 sizer for my pre-war drilling. Also Hawk Bullets makes a variety of .318 jacketed bullets. As far as cast bullets I like the RCBS 32-170GC and the NOE 32-130GC sized to .321.
