I got a bunch of old but NIB primers today and have numbers instead of standard sizing and wondering what they are for. Their old but new Remington UMC 9 1/2 and 6 1/2 size and they say Adapted to .30 caliber Goverment rifle cartridges on the 9 1/2 size box. Any ideas if their still ok to use? They say Non- corrosive/ Non- Mercuric on the box and also says Nickeled primers. They were stored for the last 40+ years in a house in wooden drawer. At the least I will have a nice bunch of mint condition old primer boxes.LOL.

6 1/2s are like standard small rifle but with a thinner cup.

In 1960, remington 9 1/2 were stanard large rifle primers -- Win/western 6 1/2 are small pistol and win/western 8 1/2 are large rifle -- Should be good -- All non-mercuric, non corrosive. ---

Odds are good that they will probably work too.
When I started reloading a few years back I found some old CCI small magnum handgun primers in my dad's shed. They'd been stored out there for about 30 years, heat and cold changes, humidity and all.
Every one of them worked fine.

In a similar vein, I have a couple of boxes of Winchester No. 116 primers. For reasons I can't recall I thought they were equivalent to large rifle primers. Can anyone confirm my idea about the primers?

I just finished the last of my Remington 6 1/2's yesterday. The are a regular small rifle primer with a thinner than normal cup. The work great for 9mm in my carbine, I had some pierce in 223 rem though.

Western 1 1/2s? What are they?

Naramore's book lists Western 1 1/2 primers as a non-corrosive small pistol primer; but be careful as it lists a Western 1 1/2B primer as a mercuric primer intended for Black powder use only. Mercuric primers will weaken brass, so the brass should only be used once and then never reloaded.

Hey, just found this thread;

I inherited a PILE of ancient primers, so thanks for the 'splainin'.

One I haven't seen mentioned is a "shotshell" primer that looks like a rifle primer. Are these for old brass shotshells?

Yup, intended for brass shotshells. I'd be leery about using those. They might be either corrosive or of a quite different brissance than rifle primers.

They might be for "reloading " shotgun primers. There was a small tool that punched the actual primer part out of the battery cup and then seated the primer, that you guys have, into the battery cup to make a new live primer and then the whole thing was seated in the shotshell just like you would do with current shotshell primers. I dont know when they stopped being made, but I can remember them being used in the 50's.

I've got some OLD Winchester Staynless Primers No. 115 primers in unopened boxes. Did open 1 box and the cup is the old type thats oval. I was told these date back to the '30/'40's.
