View Full Version : Anyone shooting 2400 powder in jacketed 308 loads

I have been pondering building a 7-800 round batch of reduced recoil 308 loads with 30-30 jacketed flat point 150 grain bullets.

Seems like 25 grains of 2400 is what I could find as I looked around the internet.

Does anybody have any experience with this load?

Any comments welcome.

Please don't load 7-800 rounds until you've settled on a load. 25 grs is a max load of 2400, I'd back it down to 22 or so.
I've had good luck making 30-30 ballistics from a .308 just by using 30-30 data. The bigger boiler room of the .308 will give you less pressure.
I'm probably the only 61 year old reloader on this site who has never used 2400! Powders I have used for this include IMR4198, IMR3031, and H4895.

According to Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, 4th Edition (2010) on p. 149, 24 grains of #2400 with 180-grain #311332 in the .308 Win.. gives 2034 fps at 40,100 psia, That is a max load and I would back off 20% from that with a jacketed bullet for starters. About 20 grains is a safe place to begin with a SMALL sample until you see how they shoot. Much easier than pulling down 700-800 rounds that don't work...

How much reduced?

For cast reduced loads 16gn of 2400 is considered a great load, but is in the 1500fps range IIRC.

I’m expecting to get 2300-2400 FPS. Won’t run the batch til I get it right. Thanks for the tips gents.

To get that velocity in a .308 with 150-grain bullets and #2400 powder you will be exceeding PROOF pressure for the cartridge. Remember that jacketed bullets have more bore drag and produce lower velocity than a lubricated lead, gaschecked cast bullet. Settle for 2000 fps and don't blow up your gun.

If you must have 2300-2400 fps then use another powder, such as IMR4198, RL7 or IMR3031.

Normally the .30-30 bullets are plain based so anything over 1500fps is inviting leading, unless you are going to powder coat.

Do you “need” 23-2400?

My favorite velocity is 17-1900 with 1750-1800 being my target.

I have ahot faster and slower and find most consistant success at these celocities.

In my 30-30’s 15-17g of 2400 behind a 155-165g has been my most accurate. You you guessed it its about 1750 fps...As a matter if fact iut of 4-5 powders 2400 was ONLY one I got good accuracy from the group buy 165 RD hp.

An old Alliant manual I have quotes your load and notes moderate pressure. About 25 years ago my son and I worked up his first hunting load with the Remington 150 grain round nose intended for the 30-30. Three years and three deer later it worked beautifully. I think that Remington bullet is sorta scarce these days but I'm sure one of the other 30-30 bullets would work fine. His rifle is a Model Seven with 20" barrel. We didn't quite get up to their published velocity but you may in your rifle.
Good Luck!

I used to load a reduced 30/30 load for a friends boy. Speer 130 FP was a better bullet. I loaded it to about 2350 fps and it works really well.

Hornady 150’s are pretty soft. Probably be ok slower as well. Never tried 2400 with them. IMR30/31 IIRC.

Sorry for confusion speaking of cast.
