Help reading wad deformation

I was researching buck shot loads here and thought I'd try a 8 pellet 00 buck out of an old IMR pamphlet that is on page 35. I was working off the second one from the bottom.

Win AA, 209 primer, 32.0 800x, WAA12R claybuster subed wad, 20 grains shot buffer, 2x4 stack 00 buck, 1545 fps.

Rem 870 12 ga. full coke. 25 yards groups on a plate and 40 some yards would show 3-4 on a paper plate.

All in all it seems okay but I have some room in the hull and the load doesn't call for anything to build up the stack.

Should that upward kink in the wad with the missing petal tell me something?

If there is space in the stack a 16 gauge .135" nitro card at the base of the cup would probably prevent that. Be cautious, see if you can find data that includes the use of the NC, that's a hot load!

hmmmmm did that load list the pressure? i bet it is running 10k +.. I think you can do better... and yes you should be able to place a card or cork wad in the base. but I think there is a better load for ya. that wad it talking heat and pressure... i doubt that wad did its job on the way down the barrel.

what is your goal for a buckshot load? self defense? Hunting? i bet you could find a load in the 1400fps that will be easier to shoot and not pushing so hard. and I bet it will group better.

The pressure they show is 10,700.

Looking to ventilate some coyotes. I got one the other evening with a .223

I've only tried WAA12R's with slugs and they were a total failure every time. Mostly the lip of the gas seal blew out, but all in all they seem to be a softer plastic than other wads and fail easier.

A 16 or 20 ga. nitro card wad in the bottom of the shotcup may help by supporting the buckshot and preventing distortion of the gas seal.

That's all I've got.

3 or 4 on a paper plate (9" ?) at 40 yds is good enough.....
After I loaded several hundred of the exact same load for "stash" I found something better. My original Winchester wads look worse, if anything, but the same result, but I agree, good enough and better than most.

So I backed the powder charge down 5% and added .125, 20 gauge nitro card in the bottom of the shot cup and a over shot card on top. The crimps look alot better.

The wads look better with all the petals intact and no strange kinks in the cushion areas. The group patterns look comparable as well.

I gotta say buckshot is pretty fun but I'm quite a novice. This target was from 45 paces; the 4 are 3.75" 1 was off the paper and 3 "flyers" opened the group up to 12.5"

Thanks for the tip on that other load. 10 or 15 extra yards is a big jump in effective range.
