Hello All: Working on a J.C. Higgins Model 50 in 270. Been told it should have a commercial bolt shroud and safety that works in the opposite direction. If that's true, do you know where these items can be found? Thanks, Dan

Brownell's might have them. If so, hold your breath when you look at the price.

.

Since the J.C.Higgins Model 50 was an FM Mauser (aka: Mauser 98), the bolt sleeve/shroud & safety config can be different, given how long FN supplied the rifles to Sear/Roebuck.

A smooth, safety-less (commercial) bolt sleeve/shroud would also need to be used in conjunction with a side-safety trigger mechanism

OTOH, the original bolt shroud that has the bolt safety built into the top, would (ergo) not require a trigger mechanism with a side safety.

Numrich has both sets of parts (bolt shroud/safety) on pp 1 & 2: https://www.gunpartscorp.com/gun-manufacturer/mauser/rifles-mauser/98-2/parts-list-mau-98?page=2

The shrouds are $20-$60 depending on safety type, the scope shroud top safeties run $22, the side safety is $16, the military type is $15.

They also have misc parts, like the shroud lock, lock spring, etc, etc.

These are the different bolt sleeve/shrouds and the top-vs-side safeties:

The last style safety is my favorite- so naturally placed. IS that a JCH m50 in the 2nd pic? Beautiful and trim I like it!

The safety on the J.C. Higgins model 50 is the low safety designed for scope use. The difference from the low safeties I've seen is that in the fire position, the lever rests on the left hand side of the action.

All the low scope safeties are aftermarket (some supplied the rifle makers that didn't for one reason or another design their own) - and the different companies offered different safeties so folks would buy one or the other due to their druthers.

There's guys like me, who are right-handed but prefer the low scope safety on the left, due to the way I carry a rifle in the ready position while stalking.

Yes
