Is anyone shooting the 45/70 with PC Bullets? Was thinking of trying the RCBS 45-300-FN .
Would a gas check still be needed?

Yes, as to GC, it depends on the base and how fast you're pushing them.

Don't forget to slug the bore or do a chamber cast before you get started :)

Also, watch your PC thickness. Sometimes the thickness of the coating will interfere with proper chambering. More so on my zero throat Browning 1886 as opposed to my Marlin 1895s. 1886 is over at Turnbull getting CCH and throated.

I haven't tried a 300 grain bullet in .45-70, but I tried some Lee 405 HB and PC'd some of them and just conventional lubed some and the PC'd boolits shot WAY better in my rifle than the lubed ones. Of course your results may vary. It's all trial and error so I'd try them both ways in your rifle and compare the results.

Yes, in both cases I was shooting the same charge of IMR4198 to compare the results. Of course results can vary from rifle to rifle too. I also have a Danish 1867 Rolling Block and tried shooting the same PC'd Lee HB 405 grain bullets in that rifle with the same charge of IMR4198 and for an old military rifle with coarse sights the results at 100 yards were nothing short of spectacular ...

Not the 300/RCBS. Altho i have the mold. I like a 425 Ranch Dog and 430 older style.

All powder coated. Yes problems can be had with styles resembling a bore rider. As the PC can add too much diameter.
Both of mine have short but wide flat points so no issues and theys hoot very well.

That 300 gr. RCBS proved too small for my Marlin with Ballard cut rifling, maybe the PC would make it fit better and even hit the target.

I shoot both PC and HiTek bullets in my 45-70. I run gas checks on mine, not sure if they are needed but i do it anyway.

I tried a 300 gr. bullet from a NOE mould and didnt have great results. It seemed that my Marlin didnt like the weight???

Here it is, PC'd and GC'd and also loaded in a case.

I have had much better results with the NOE 354 gr. FP mould that cones out as an even 360 grs. when coated and checked. I originally got this for my .458 SOCOM but found it also worked really well in my 45-70. It is now my primary 45-70 bullet for shooting. If I am looking for a deiiferent use I can always use one of my other WFN style moulds.

Where do you get powder coating material and how do you do it?

Very interesting. Want to try them from a Ruger 1, Not really concern with a fast fps, just punching paper.

I got the Lyman 292 gr mould knowing it
might drop a smaller boolit. I wasn't concerned
since I powder coat.

It did, so I do. Coat 'em up, size to .460.

Everybody's happy !

I use that 354 g bullet in my Ruger #1H in .460 Weatherby. I shoots the real well and makes for a nice low recoil plinker.

I have 4 or so molds for the 45-70 am loading the NOE and a ARSENAL mold both powder coated and shooting out of a Uberti 1886 lots of fun. Not using a gas check as these are plain base molds though I have a plain base gas check die from pat marlin I need to use and try.
