Rossi 92 barrel relining

Howdy,

I have a Rossi/Puma 92 in 45 Colt. I am thinking of having it relined/rechambered in 44-40. Who would you guys recommend?

John would know better, but IMO due to the very small difference in bore sizes between the .45 Colt (.458") and the .44-40 (.427"), the liner wouldn't work.

IMO (again) while a liner might work if the entire barrel's bored out to accept a thicker liner, it would be much more feasible to simply re-barrel it to .44-40.

I have to agree with this.

I think it would be far less expensive to simply re-barrel the rifle.

I had thought of this option but I can't seem to find the correct barrel.

Since my rifle is a Puma there seems to be some question about thread sizes etc.

That what they make lathes for.

All you need is the correct bore and twist rate. After that, it can be turned to the needed profile, threaded, chamber cut, cut to length, make the crown, install the sight(s).

For your Rossi, rebarreling, while an option, is more expensive than lining.

As mentioned before, get in touch with John Taylor. His answers will be based on actual shop experiences.

Liner in 38-40 OD is 9/16 and 5/8" diameter. Liner in 44-40 is 5/8", sometimes I can get them a little smaller on special order. Old barrel should be at least .1" over liner diameter at the muzzle. Green Mountain has barrel blanks in round and octagon. These require threading, conturing (round), chamber, dovetail cuts and crown. Octagon barrel require draw filing to get rid of machine marks. The 38-40 has a 1 in 40" twist and the 44-40 has 1 in 36" twist. The liners have a faster twist, 16 and 18 for the 38-40, 16,18 and 24 for the 44-40. New barrels require bluing or browning, liners keep the old finish. Hope this helps

I just have to decided which caliber to go with.
