Hello friends,

I have a new to me Rossi(Puma) 92 in 45 Colt. I really like the rifle but it has the typical oversized chamber and it is making accuracy difficult to achieve.

I had the idea of rebarrelling this rifle to 38-40 or 44-40. Have any of you guys done this? Is there a gunsmith that would take this on?

Are there other options?

I would like to keep the 24" octagon barrel.

Thanks in advance,

Steve in N CA

Have it lined to 38 or 44WCF.Would be cheaper than re-barreling.

I second Rimfires post. I had a shot out original 92 lined to 44 WCF with awesome results. I believe Randy's Custom Rifles in Wyoming did the work.

They use to make one in 44-40 years ago and I shot one for a long time it took 430 bullets and I had to make an expander for the cases but it was a good shooter. You shouldn't have to change the guide rails at all for 38 or 44 40. I see no problems with the conversion.

Have that barrel set back and rechambered to a snug 45 colt chamber.

Thanks guys.

If I go the relining route is there someone you guys recommend?

I will check out Randy's as mentioned above.

Thanks,

Steve

.

Board member John Taylor here does excellent re-lining

but

IMO, while re-lining to .38-40 might work (I would be leery about the chamber diameter needed), a liner with a .427" bore would be impractacal because it's too thin.
