Pillar Bedding, Alum Tubing Source

I'd like to pillar bed a stock, cutting and fitting my own pillars. Anyone have a source for the aluminum tubing needed and perhaps recommend the size and or hardness? The stock is a Win

I believe the last one I did was with 3/4" round steel cold rolled this allowed me to fit into stock flush and counter sink the action screw into it. I drill a couple thousandths over screw size, bed and then open up the screw holes a little. Makes alignment easier. I also cut a shallow thread down the out side around 20 tpi or a little finer. Not super deep but .015 - .025 on a side to help carry epoxy thru and give a bond area.

I have made my own Pillars out of 1/2" , 5/8" or 3/4" Brass or Aluminum Round Stock from the local Hardware store or Scrap yard.
I just drilled out the center to make the Sleeve, then turn the outside to whatever shape or Size I needed.
I would Contoured the top edge to fit any round receivers, and countersink the bottom to fit the action screws.
I didn't find that Hardness of the material did not matter that much.
The action screws will not exert enough force to Crush the material, and being all one unit, ( if tight ) will not batter under recoil.

I made a couple from 1” aluminum scrap turned down to 9/16” for a Remington 700 plastic stock.
Put some 1/8” grooves in so the epoxy had a good grip on them.

I used a brass coupling meant for air hose. It was the right size for a savage .22.

I used an X-acto handle. They made some fat ones, 1/2" diameter, perfect for pillar bedding. Can't remember if it was already drilled through or if I had to finish drilling the inside, but I chucked it in my drill press and cut grooves around it 1/4" apart.

Yesterday I cut this 4 pound Bartlein barrel down to 2 pounds 4 ounces. It is going to be a lightweight 260.

Making a pillar with 1/2" Aluminum alloy round stock.

Side cut with 1.25" end mill for a pre compressed V block like fit the 1.3" Remington 700 receiver.
Drill a hole for action screw.

This is a used stock. You can barely see I have drilled out the previous owner's 1/2" Aluminum pillars. What you can't see is how I also chiseled out where he bedded around the recoil lug.

I roughed up the outside of the pillars to grip the epoxy better.
I globbed Devcon Plastic Steel Putty on the pillars and behind the recoil lug.

The correct aluminum rod or bar stock for machined parts is 6061-T6. This is the most common heat treated aircraft and military specification aluminum used in industry.

Brass bushing's from Lowes, Rural King etc. Come in different size's .

You can buy actual pillars from Brownells for less than $15.00. Time is valuable so unless your time is very cheap, that's probably the easiest route.
A bedding pillar is not a complex part, so if you have the time and want to make your own, that's certainly a possibility too.
Some aluminum or brass bar stock, a lathe or even a drill press and you could make your own.

Ive made several from 1/4” steel brake line from the auto parts. No machining, cut to length with a tubing cutter, hit the outside with a grinder or file and epoxy in.
