last year I posted about a beat up 45-70 marlin I found.

Thanks to some members of this sight, I discovered that my use of a lee factory crimp die was making my lee mold cast boolits keyhole.

thanks to member Mitch, I was able to acquire a mold that was the weight I wanted -400 gr- at what, based on yesterdays range session, the ideal diameter.

No more keyholes..boolets stabilized, and grouped at 100, and 200 yards.

production to begin!

I have full buckhorns on it, and they work pretty well. Though I may try the RDS on it, and see how it works

Got the mag tube installed. New spring is on the way. New capacity is 7+1.
Got to get it on the range to see if the new configuration effects accuracy.

Good morning Maine1
That is a fine looking Marlin ! Rebuilding a "badly used" lever rifle and then shooting it is a fine way to move along through your learning.
One day in the future start applying apple cider to that new mag and it will turn a nice color of "patina" an look right at home under that barrel. A cotton ball dampened with the apple cider and some rubbing daily and you will arrive at your desired look.

Cool, thanks mike!
Over the years ive had a few project guns, but this is becoming my favorite.

I'll likely refinish the whole gun at some point, and give the stock a pine tar finish.

Seems like the tube is installed Ok, it shoots pretty well. A few boo-boos I need to fix when I get the Mig out- it will take longer to set up the welder than to fix. Noticed yesterday that the little bracket that the forearm endcap screws thread into is cracked at one of the holes. instead of buying another, i'll just fix this one. No telling how long its been like that.

The loop is something I may try forging out into a larger loop- not a ridiculous one, just one for a glove. maybe the trigger guard too,.

How does the apple cider work? I'm guessing it's like vinegar but does it work over the new bluing?
And if you add pine tar to the stock, make sure to heat the wood up. Stocks are usually tight dense grain. I have orignal winchesters and added tat to the stock. It's a period correct treatment but you need to heat the wood up alot to open the pores. Even thinned down, it didnt want to suck up all of it. :)

I love it when a plan comes together.

That's the plan...heat the wood with a torch, and/or leave it out on a hot day. depends on the weather and when I decide to get to it. Pine tar is great on tool handles, I started doing mine a while ago when i got tired of having to buy them over and over. My Grandfather was much the same.

BTW..got the new full length spring in yesterday, feeds all 7 rounds pretty slick now, dry racking anyway. Hoping to get home early enough to shoot it some tonight.
