I found some one who is offering "Pure Dead Soft Lead 50 pounds - $55" and shipping it flat rate for another $10. Is it worth paying just over a dollar a pound?

The price of lead has been going on a "roller coaster ride" for sometimes now. Four or five years ago I was purchasing pure lead from a foundry in Alabama for 18 Cents a Pound. Then the price took off and last year, pure lead was going for $1.60 per pound!
Righ now, with the economic recession, lead has dropped to around 50 Cents per Pound and will probably go lower. Keep in mind that this is lead purchased at the foundry with no shipping expenses involved.

I am seeing the same drop at the local scrap yards. Even copper has come way down, just after I rewired my machine shop. :(

I just sold some scrap copper pipe and pop cans the other day.
-$ .38/lb. aluminum cans
-$1.25/lb. copper pipe
-$ .30/lb. lead
He said that he sells the lead to a guy that buys it all at the same time, usually 800-900 lbs. each time. It wouldn't be a terrible deal, but I don't have $270 laying around to use. Maybe you could try and contact a construction company and see if they are digging up old roads around you? Sometimes the stuff they dig up is lead pipe...just a thought.

I sold some aluminum to a large scrap yard in the area. I asked him what lead was going for. Thinking I had some to sell he said .10 per pound. When he found out I wanted to buy the price was .75 per pound. Someone is getting rich and it is NOT me or you.
