Okay this little gun has been kinda finicky and I’ve made several passes at improvement, with success, but now I’m into the next phase. It seems to jam on chambering. The photo shows where it jams. Id thought it was the mouth hitting the chamber but it seems like it’s the rim catching the ramp things down low. Is this known? I’m not super proficient in lever actions.
Also, I’d be interested in a reasonably priced spring kit if anyone knows of one. My hardware store experimenting has proved helpful but I’m wondering if there’s a better way. Also the loading gate is a little stiffer sprung than I’d like, does anyone reduce that spring?

I have an Armi San Marco '92 .44-40 that had the very same problem. But, I didn't go through all of the preliminary things you seem to have gone through, so can't necessarily speak to that. But what I'm seeing, looking at your photo, is exactly the situation I had, which was jamming on feeding, with the rim of the case being held up by the feed rails on both sides. For me, the solution was not easy. It required numerous complete disassemblies of the receiver, as the feed rails are the very last thing to come out. It was a "cut and try" job, file a little, polish a little, and gradually I got it to work. The case rides up sufficiently high on the elevator for the bolt to catch it and push it forward, but then jams on the feed rails as seen in your picture. So you have to taper the area of the feed rails forward of where the rim is resting, but it also requires under cutting and tapering underneath the rails where you can't see in the photo. Every time you work on it you'll get the case to move a bit farther forward, and finally it will clear the lips, the rear of the case will pop up into the face of the bolt as it moves forward and it will chamber. For the sake of safety it's best to make a couple of dummy rounds without primer or powder as you need the bullet in place in the case for feeding purposes while repeatedly trying to chamber the round. The round in the photo looks kind of mangled. Good luck with the job...it requires patience.

Yes it got mangled by me repeatedly chambering it and ejecting. It’s just an empty fired case too so not totally indicative, but I didn’t have any dummmies at the moment. Thanks for the tips I’ll look at that

Might be the nose profile of the bullet. Does it jam with other bullets...factory ammo?
What bullets are you using? It's difficult to diagnose a gun from one pic remotely, far away, but my Puma did not care for SWC bullets (44 Magnum). With a bit of fiddling and using either a deeply seated bullet or Special brass I could get it to feed but no better than 90%. I contacted Steve's Gunz (aka Nate Kiowa Jones), bought is CD and a few small pieces and the info I got was excellent. He is the "Rossi 92 Specialist"... https://stevesgunz.com/

Awesome that worked! I’d never removed those ramps before. They looked good so I trued them with a file and smoothed them with sandpaper but that didn’t really help. Then I noticed that one ramp was engaging the case rim before the other one, preventing it from contacting and doing anything. So I removed that ramp again and ground back it more aggressively and Shazam! It feeds like a mo—fo now! Thanks,

Yes it was jamming with different bullets and even empty cases pretty much equally.

Gosh, how did I even live before the internet?
Here’s the little devil. 45colt. Very fun to shoot (except jamming) in the SBR form it’s now officially in. Next project, new wood.

I find the same thing if the Rifle is canted to one side or the other, best fix was adding a taper cramp when handloading rounds. No more problems after that..

I had 2 in 45 Colts . At various times I used Federal , Remington , Starline , Winchester , PMC and Fiocchi brass . Federal would occasionally bock during feeding but was limited to a stutter with nickeled cases , Remington would not feed short of turning the rifle upside down and jiggling . I did the tear down and polish bit with guidance from Buckshot here . After several passes everything except the Remington brass would feed . New RP , older high mileage , not even nickeled would feed and it was hanging in the feed rails . On a whim and possibly in error I fed Starline Schofield brass through it so I can say confidently that the rim dia was not the issue that affected the RP brass . In the end it didn't matter for me because the companion BlackHawk didn't like the RP brass anyway .
End game in both an 1980's and a 2013' vintage M92' Rossi without and with safety bolts new out of the box and pre-owned with 1000 + rounds down range steadfastly refused to feed RP brass .
The loading gate is one piece . Gentle stoning of the spring section to thin it slightly , like polish the bluing off , make new scratches , blue , fit , and trial , repeat as needed gently . Take care on the first go to touch all of the outer edges to remove burrs etc . Just knocking the sharp edges off will make a tremendous difference in feel .
Buckshot recommended using the Cratex wheels in your Dremel tool and the often included polish . It worked great for me on the internals . I'm an oil stone guy and the old Carborundum fine side of the 2 sided knife sharpening stone worked fine for the flat surfaces and rounding the long edges .

Yep I massaged the loading gate as well, and did just as you say, but used my 1”x42” belt sander with a red scotch Brite belt on it which did a great job on the spring, and I also smoothed the forward edge so that my fingernails will hopefully remain intact now and yes, it made a great difference in feel on that. So I think all that’s left now is maybe reduce mag tube spring by a few coils or find a new one that’s weaker. And maybe a mag tube follower that’s metal. That might be a fun lathe project.
By the way, a vertical 1” belt sander with scotch brite belts is one of the best tools I’ve ever purchased.

The problem is all that fringey stuff on the lever;-)
IMO from owning a couple of .357s and one 44-40 is that they are “kits” requiring TLC and a cuss word or three to get them going. But dang, they shoot good. Steve’s CD is a bargain. I think I dis and reassembled my 44-40 at least 50 times before I was happy with it. And that’s the one I miss the most!

Ha yeah the fringey stuff is still a work in progress lol. I’ve done a ton of little projects on this gun and it’s getting there finally. I almost broke down recently and bought a marlin due to my dissatisfaction but thanks to y’all I’m getting re inspired to tinker on it.
It’s funny, it was clear from the start that Rossi has no intention of ever even trying out this rifle because the front sight was too low by about 3/8”. It was SO low you’d have to shoot like several feet low to even hole to hit. Like, cmon guys. Oh well, it’s Brazil. Maybe they have a different idea of what a weapon should do

Funny thing about Brazilian cowboy guns. A late friend who was a match winning CAS shooter told me that the Stoeger Coach gun was IT for the shotgun matches straight from the box.

Oh ya, I have no doubt they can match anyone in quality actually. My 1911 is also from Brazil and it’s a fine piece. But, it also has a two piece barrel so...... it’s all those little things lol.

what cal is this.. i have a 357 that just needed a bit of work and a 44 mag that i spent days fixing
reloads or factory... ?
Try marking up the inside of the action with a black sharpie marker...
where .. Where to mark is where the rim slides up the notches in the side plates
if it jams when the rim tries to go up it can look like it is jaming on the nose... so try a black marker
round have also been known to jam at the front of the side plates

It’s a 45colt. But yeah, I’m pretty sure I fixed it by grinding one of the ramps so it matches the other side a little better. Thanks

Your issue is the left & right cartridge carrier screws are scraping the sides of the cases because the screws on the action are tightened too deep. With the bolt in battery, look at the 2 screws and lossen them so the end of the screws are below the cartridge carriers

Hmm, I don’t think so, since my work grinding has fixed the issue, but I’m curious what you’re talking about. Are you saying that it’s recommended to run with any of the screws loose? That seems unlikely to me.

I think what he was saying is that the screws might be too long and to loosen the screws and see if the round would cycle better.

About 2 years ago I looked at a new, fresh out of the box Rossi Ranch Hand that refused to give reliable feeding. Went through the entire StevesGunz process but got no improvement. Called RossiUSA and they agreed to take a look at it. The Rossi came back in short time with a note of apologies and the explanation that the wrong feed ramps had been installed at the factory. With this correction the Rossi fed up ammo like it was supposed to have done from the start. Hearing your report of different size relief cuts in the ramps makes me wonder if you got one correct and one not so from the factory.

Hmm, that could be. Maybe 4mag ramp on one side or something. Well in any case I made a dummy round last night and it hungrily accepts it and several other profiles so all’s good in the hood at this point. Now I’m on to messing with the stock, can’t wait to show you guys what I’ve got planned for that.

A bump stock?[emoji16]
I have 2 Rossi 92's in 45 Colt and love both of them. My new one would jam my dummy round just as your pic shows but chambered all of my fresh re-loads just fine. You have that problem solved any how. Spring kits-I would stay away from the Lee Gunslinger kit. The ejector spring is crazy long and a total PIA to install. The trigger spring took my trigger pull down to 15oz's. Way too light for a fool around and hunting gun. Steves Gunz spring kits are alright but I prefer the Palo Verde kit. Its about 5 bucks more but I really think it's the best one out there

I hope ya can figure it out!!
I didnt read all comments so please excuse if already mentioned. But there is a couple real good tear down videos on uTube. Have you torn it down and cleaned up all parts looking for burrs that might cause these issues? You can smooth things up ALLOT on some guns pretty easilly with just a couple hours on a rainy day.
I am very pleased with the results of this on myown 92/45. It feeds very well and even long OAL length loadings that wont work in my Marlins!
Good luck,
CW
