Hi:

Does anyone know what the Most Popular Handgun Caliber in Cowboy Action shooting is?

I am thinking about doing it and a friend of mine said he thought it was the .38 special caliber.

I thought it had to be a caliber that came out early that the .38 special did (1906).

Thanks,

Terryt

I'll agree, it's the cheapest to buy/load for.
It's easy on recoil. So it's the gamers goto Cartridge.

My Dad and I, each had a Colt SAA IN .44spl when we started. And I had a Win '94 20" in .44mag, a Savage 311R in 12ga. So that's what I started with. A whole bunch of folks started with .38spl because they had .357 Blackhawks. Rossi 92 copies in .357/44 were under $200. Back in 1987, Rossi SXS's and other Brazilian SxS's were available for just as cheap. Marlins in .357/.44 for $100 more.

But a Pair of Big VAQUERO'S 7 1/2" bbl's and a 24" bbl'ed Marlin 1894CB in .45COLT, they make you feel like you are really Shooting Something.

For those shooting smokeless probably .38 spl with.45 Colt being a distant second. If you are planning on shooting black, .44-40 is most popular. If you have SASS/CAS questions, please feel free to message me. I'll do the best to answer. SASS also has a forum on their site.
