1907 were often used in prisons and law enforcement. Perhaps some kind of lanyard retention lock? I'm just throwing stuff against the wall here to see what sticks.

I have a 1905 .35 WSL that had a hole in the stock when I got it, right about where the pin is on your rifle. I have no idea what was in it, but I filled it with the head of a shotgun shell.
