I want to start casting for my Ruger Mini-14. It has a 1 in 9" twist. What mold should I start with? Any powder and velocity range to start with?

What you should start with is another rifle with a 1 in 12" or 1 in 14" twist. The 1 in 9" twist will not handle cast bullets even marginally well.

Scrounger,
Not a flame, but I've shot a "crudely modified" Bator mould lengthened to 62 grs.) in my 1:8 AR-15 That does about 1.5" @ 100- nothing to write home about, as it shoots "J" bullets a 1/2", but I would consider it "Marginally well".

My 10" twist Mini14 handled Lyman's 225462 over H4895 fairly well. Velocity was in the 1800-1900 fps and it functioned the action reliably.

I would go with the SAECO 60 grain.

I have had two 22 moulds, the other was the Lyman flat nose. The saeco was the better bullet.

Truth is, there aint nuthin to be gained shooting a 22 cast bullet in the .223 ctg.

Truth is yu'd be better off to take the 100 dollar cost of the mould and set up, , and get some cheep 22 military ball bullets at the gun show. In the long run I think you would be better off.

just my opinion.

I really like the RCBS 22-55-sp. Shoots decently (need more load development) out of several 1:7, and alright in a 1:8 semi-automatic .223/556 rifles. Im willing to trade .5-1" of accuracy for a boolit that feeds from the magazine of those rifles.

I dont think i would want to go any lighter then 59 (checked and lubed) gr's with these twists, but this boolit seems to do better then i figured a cast .22 would do in a auto-loader at around 2000fps.

If you do a search on posts by myself you you will find what you are after. I use the NEI .224-71gc in my 1 in 9" Savage. Well under MOA at 2200fps+.
