Lee target minie

So I found a Lee minie mold (the one that is basically a hollow base wadcutter for muzzleloader)

I've read alot here about the poor accuracy some folks are getting out of these....and my question is why? What causes these to not group well...or as a second question...has anyone had a chance to get these grouping well?

Seems like it would be a great pill to hunt with through the boiler room but if I can't hit with it , no use trying.

I have a 1:28 and a 1:48 rifle.

Not sure if it was a good buy or not but I got it for 5bucks so not much lost on it....cast some pretty boolits would love to see if it will work.

Thoughts? I don't know if that 1:28 rifle will do much good with it....even with light loads. Boy is sure like to see if it could though.

A lot tend to over load the hollow bases blowing out the skirts. If this is a 50cal I would start around 50 grns of 1 1/2F or 2F and work up to best accuracy. Lube with a true black powder bullet lube like spg

Since a lot of round ball twists were in the 1-66 range I thing yours 1-28 and 1-48 should do well with this shorter bullet.

If after casting some you decide to pan lube them You might consider setting them in the pan and laying a piece of 1/4" acrylic or thin sheet metal on them with a weight. Si te air pocket in the hollow base cant lift or tip them

Cast from 1-30 or 1-40 they should be a very good performing bullet

I have the above Parker Hale P58 Naval Pattern 58 cal musket. Has a 48" twist, 5 groove bore.

P58 Enfield. 40grs Elephant 3Fg Lee Target Minie. 50 yards offhand. Minie's not weighed, charges thrown from measure.

NEI 500gr Target Minie. 70 grs Swiss 2Fg, .060" overpowder card, 5 shots @ 50 yards benched.

Due to it's ballistically challanged shape I've never shot the Lee to over 50 yards, and with it's fairly thin skirt I've never shot it with more then 50 grains of powder. For hunting and heavier charges I'd think a thicker skirt might be a benefit (plus it'd add some weight). Someone with a lathe could gin up a new base plug without too much sweat.

I have the 58cal version of the Lee "Trashcan" minie and it shoots very well out of my 53 Parker Hale and my Parker Hale musketoon. Out of both guns at 50yds, it's almost a single big hole group but starts falling apart much past 50yds.

IIRC - The Lee came in standard and oversize versions too.
