Has anyone tried Lee's 220gr conical (.456") for the Ruger Old Army in a 45-70.
I have a Marlin 1895 and want to plink on a small holding with reduced loads, not gallery loads.
We have local powders that are comparable with Unique, Bullseye, IMR4227 and IMR4350.

I have shot a few out of my 45-70, I just used 45lc data and that seemed to work for me.

I like em beagled to .460 and loaded over 18gr of unique. Fun plinker load.

I tried them in my H&R Officer's Model trap door. Best load was with 9 gr of Bullseye for 1150 fps.

Hi Wiljen,

How do you "beagle" them to .460?

Hi Wiljen,

How do you "beagle" them to .460?

It involves placing strips of aluminum tape parallel to the cavities to open the mold slightly. Beagle wrote the article thus the term "beagling". The link below will take you to a more complete discussion of it and searching this forum will get you several more hits as well.

hope that helps, good luck with it.

I tried this just the other day. I don't know if I used the wrong type of tape or what but it didn't last but a very short time. I used the aluminum tape like they use in the heating and air conditioning business.

I posted something about the same as this on another forum. All I got was you are going to blow up your gun, send a picture of your face when you blow it off ect. ect. I was going to beagle a Lee 230 gr Round nose. This is when I quit that forum and joined this one. Best move I ever made.

Thank you so far guys,

Just another question or two. Do you use filler over the pwder charge? Do you use some type of crimp? Will a Lee Factory Crimp work (if crimping is required)?

Filler No - not needed with Bullseye, Reddot, unique loads.
Crimp yes and Yes.

No filler needed as mentioned. If used in a single shot then a crimp is not needed either. I used a taper crimp die to straighten out case flare if necessary.

Also it is not hard to open the rear band in the mould about .003" so it will cast out at .459". They shoot much better when so opened.

I found a crimp helpful even in my single shot as I got smaller SDs and ESs when using a fairly tight crimp. Admittedly, it isn't needed in the same sense as when used in a levergun where setback is a concern, but you may want to try with and without crimp in your single shots as well.
