Shooting in my 1894 Legacy 24” barrel 45 Colt l was using 8.2 grains of Hodgeon Universal powder and it really heated the barrel fast and the empty’s were very hot to touch. Is this normal? I have no experience with pistol powders and this seemed to be excessively hot. IMR 4227 did nothing compared to this Universal.

I am a devotee of Universal. I use it in 9MM, .40S&W, .45 auto, .38 spl, .357, .38-40, .45 Colt & .454 Casull. Even some light cast bullet rifle loads.
All pistols except for the .38-40, but have never thought it any hotter than any other powder in it's general burn range.
H110 generates a LOT more heat in the .454, but it's also using a LOT more powder by weight.
Short answer is... No, this does not seem normal to me based on MY experience.
Someone more knowledgeable than I will likely be along shortly.

I noticed the very same thing. Casings were VERY hot compared to my beloved Unique loads.

I backed my load down to 7.5 grains and got no excessively hot barrel or casings.
