I finally finished up my project molds I found 3 old dual cavity Lyman wadcutter molds on Fleabay. The first two had some rusting and needed cleaning, the Ideal 358-432c was in like new condition(still required a good cleaning.

Left to Right, all cast same isotope alloy 11bhn

Lyman 358-495 drops .359 @148 grs
Lyman 358-432s drops .361 @ 153 grs
Ideal 358-432c drops .360 @ 162 grs

normal 158gr SWC for comparison..


The 148gr and 153gr when seating to crimp grove, will protrude into the case .370, The 162gr has a noticeably larger bottom driving band so it protrudes .390 into the case. The standard 158grSWC for comparison protrudes .330 into the case.


Loading in .38 special brass, with standard velocity loads, the 148, 153 and reg 158swc can use the same loads. I did have to work up separate loadings for the 162gr since is has the longest shank. I'm liking 3.5 grs of HP38/231 for 770fps across my Labradar, or I can go 3.5grs of Green Dot for 815fps.

Lookin' good. The 458432 is my absolute favorite wadcutter. I've got a 4 cavity that started me on this hobby. Mine is the 148gr version but it also came in a 160gr offering. You seem to have both.... enjoy!

When I still cast Wadcutters, I prefered the #358495. Still have a 2cav, somewhere..........

Bullseye - 2.7grs in .38spl match cases. But I could never cast better then a Factory Swaged.

I've got an old Ideal 4-cav 358495, the 141gr version. With range scrap it drops right at .358, and weighs 146 lubed.

I like it very much. The 4 cav makes piles in a hurry, and the old iron mold is a joy to use.

There's just something so natural about shooting wadcutters from a Model 14, it just seems everything is right with the world.

When I ran the indoor PPC section of our gun club I cast many 358-495. So many in fact that I was using 2 Lyman 4 cavity molds at the same casting session. I used straight WW`s as I had access to several sources for them. When I sized/lubed them I only put lube in the bottom groove. My .38 spcl load was 3.5 gr. of either HP-38 or Win. 231 with Winchester primers. My S&W Model 14-3 with 6" barrel liked this load combo. Must have been decent as I have some trophies to prove something went right.Robert
