Looking for some 30/40 Krag loads using WW 231. Have bullets ranging from 115 to 220 gr.
Loads are for a Remington RB #5

Don't use 231 but do use Bullseye for mouse fart loads in 30/40 and 30/40AI, not sure how burn rates compare. Found 5 grains was a fun load with either 125 or 175 grain cast, lighter bullet was like shooting a 22rf. The AI is a Ruger No 3 and has a shorter throat and shot the 125 really well, the original Krag had a longer throat and preferred the heavier bullet.

While there is no .30-40 data at this link
http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm
There are plainbased cast loads provided for .30-30 and .30-'06. You could safely use the .30-30 data there as a guide. Be aware that the starting .30-'06 charges listed which don't exceed the max ones listed for the same powder in the .30-30 case are also OK, but using heavier ones you are on your own nickel.

Good to look at the article by Ed Harris on reduced loads for milsurp rifles .
Having said that, I say 5grs of w231 will shoot ok with the cast bullets. Drill out the flash hole with a number 30 drill. This will allow the primer to get more fire into the case. Don't use a larger drill. You need to leave enough floor in the primer pocket to support the legs of the anvil in the primer.
Even 4 hrs of w231 will work to shoot paper.

One of my best groups I ever shot with my Swiss k31 with with W231 . Yeah not a Krag but it did work as well as Bullseye and better than red dot . 5-7 grs of w231 should do what your asking

Must be missing something. I do not see any for the 30/40 Krag
Your right. Both loads for rifles with much stronger actions than the Rolling block. Thought they might give some clue as to where to start with a 231 load.
