I bought my first ported Smith & Wesson today. According to the 4th Edition Catalog its 1 of 500. I almost felt cheated by the lack of recoil🤪

Cool. I suspect you will get over the "Being Cheated" feeling. Let us know more details on your range time.

Porting works. Back in the late 80's, I had a Tec-9 pistol. I bought the ported compensator for it. It had a threaded bbl, so figured why not? I shot multiple 10 rounds strings, back to back with the comp in place, and without. The difference was obvious and repeatable. Tighter groups with less felt recoil with the comp attached. So, I decided to port my Bisley and took it to Magna-port, which is a local business to me. I called ahead and they did the work while I waited. Glad I did, and I would recommend it to anyone that thinks it may be something they want to have done.

picked up a 7-shot 586 l-comp awhile back. It's nothing to burn 200/300 rounds of hot full house loads of 2400 pushing 170gr bullets in a single range session.

The comped s&w's are well worth owning.

Enjoy

Is that a 629? My only ported gun is a S&W 460 XVR. I'm not sure how much of a difference the porting makes but it's not as bad to shoot as I was expecting. I thought the blow back would be worse based on what I had read, but I've never even noticed anything.

I need to post a pic, my wife has an SP101 with the super short barrel and the long cylinder. She keep 180 Talons in it and the recoil was brutal to say the least. I am lucky enough to have a gunsmith in the area that ported barrels. It has 3 holes in the top of the barrel, smallest closest to the frame and largest taking out a tiny bit of the front sight. With really hot, heavy bullet 357 loads you can now shoot it with one hand but it does have a tiny bit of negative recoil. She loves it, the fireball is a force to be reckoned with. 1 shot after dark will do in your night vision.

I had my 45ACP pin revolver done the same way, makes the 625 very fun with 255 grain 45ACP's.

Yes. It's a 629 classic.

I have a 696 .44 special 3" that was Magna Ported when I traded for it. I think it was one of the distributor special runs. If I wanted to I could shoot all the hot Skeeter loads I could make up with no problem. GF

I also have called ahead and dropped off both pistols and rifles to be Magna-ported on the spot. My 2 favorite firearms that I`ve had ported are my S&W 29-3 6" barrel and my Model 70 Win. in .416 Taylor.Robert

I thought the ported barrel on my Tarus 455 was just for looks , chambered for 45 acp , the barrel is only two inches long!
But the funny thing is , when shooting the gun , it seems like there is less recoil than with any of my 1911's .
But maybe it's all just an optical dillusion and I just think there is less recoil .
At least it looks cool . Big Bore Belly Guns with ported 2" barrels are fun .

I just love my 44 revolver ported Mag. I shoot the lee 310’s in it exclusively as it is sighted for those. Without the porting, they can be bone crushers for recoil. Had a couple different 44 revolvers un ported over the years, and the difference is major. No trouble shooting them 310’s full House with 2400 or H110. Every once in a while I will shoot somebody else’s un-ported 44 with full house 310’s just to remind myself why I love it....

To Boatswainmate, that is one PURTY smith... just beautiful. Congrats on the find.

Congrats!

I had a 10" SBH 44mag and it was a handful to shoot... Then I got a ported 10" 500 S&W and all of a sudden my revolver shooting got pleasant and accurate. I sold the Ruger right away.

That was 15 years ago,I had the Smith for ten years. And now I'm back with a 4" barrel this time. I can shoot 425 grain 1200 fps LBT plinkers all day.
