Does anybody use inert fillers {dacron fluff etc) of card wads to keep the powder in place and in so doing do you get better accuracy, If what type of filler or wads do you use. Just wondering if it would help in my 38/55 with 250 gr lead bullets [smilie=s::bigsmyl2:

I ruined a perfectly good rifle by doing this. That was over 30 years ago, haven't used a filler since, nor will I. EVER!

I haven't used wads or filler in my 38-55 or the .450 Marlin or the 45-70 that I had. No problems with accuracy or ignition but I've only used Unique, 4198, or 3031 powderwise.

Skip the fillers ... just do a Muzzle Up to settle the powder before pulling the trigger

Unless you're loading very light loads with fast handgun powders, there's not a lot of room left for fillers. I suppose it could be done, but is certainly not necessary. I've considered trying a thin grease wad in the .38-55, but never have. Again, probably not needed and of questionable benefit.

When I was loading 470ne with RL15 I would top it off with a tuft of Dacron under a 500gn cast bullet.

I use a bit of dacron between 21 gr 4198 and a 250 gr cast bullet, not tamped down just get it started and let the bullet place it as it's seated. It's the most accurate load I've found so far. I don't use a filler with my plinking load of 10 gr Universal, it's not far behind the 4198 load in accuracy, but plenty good enough for backyard gongs.

...and ...

Realize that these two methods operate off of two completely different principles: total case filler that disintegrates into dust; and weightless powder positioner for extremely small/fast powder charges that ceases to exist upon primer ignition.

I use Dacron in a CPA 44-1/2, .38-55 Win, with 15.6 gr. 5744, 330 gr Lyman, & WLR. Eliminates the hangfires and will put 5 of them under a half inch at 100 yds.

Not near any of my load data currently and don't remember if I use a filler or not with my .38-55 load. If you are going to use the Dacron, do it as Larry describes. That's how I have done mine and have had no issues what so ever with any of my rifles.
