My 26 yr old granddaughter and boyfriend came over for Sunday dinner. We were talking about different topics and things in general, when she looks at me and asked "what do you think about me joining the Army". Smiled at her and said "I think that is great". Wife said she had already told her about joining and was afraid I would try to discourage her. Completely out of the blue, never mentioned joining the military before. Said she wanted a new adventure and wanted to do great things. So she was sworn in yesterday and will report to Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. on the 12 th Sept. for basic training and will do her AIT there also as an MP. She loves the farm life and has a physically active job and lifestyle. Had to share this with this community because a complete surprise, guess some of my views must have rubbed off on her. She lived with us for over six years when she was little. Always encouraged her to have her own opinion and do what she wanted to do, hopefully this adventure will work out for her. She loves to shoot. Told her "guess now my Uncle's dress uniform from WW II will be passed down to you". Still smiling.

The only downside for me is she has a indoor dog and has requested that we take him in while she is away for training." Ole willy" is pretty laid back so hopefully will only be a minor inconvenience.

My step son done his basic training at Ft Leonard Wood, 554th Engineer Battalion class 18N-17 Delta Company in 2017. He first was going for a MP but he broke his ankle during basic training. They sent him home to heal. Then he went back changed his MOS from MP to Horizontal Engineer. Had to re do his basic training and because AIT for Horizontal Engineer was 2 weeks shorter than MP he took it. Now he’s kicking himself for not just staying as a MP. Which he in the National guard. Is now a Specialist E4 and when his time is up he’s joining the Army full time. He’s going to Germany in August to play war games for two weeks or so.

Thank your granddaughter for serving our fine country.

Congratulations! She sounds like a fine young lady. You must be a pretty good Grand Parent too!

My oldest Granddaughter, actually a step Granddaughter that we claim as our own, is joining the Navy. She will report in sometime this Summer. She is 18.

Way cool.

Maybe we'll see picture a picture of her in the NRA Rifleman magazine on the Army Shooting Team.

Under Federal law 42 yrs old is the oldest. Each branch sets their own age limits. The Army is 35.

Was at Leonard Wood from 79-82, 543rd EOD Control Center. Nice post, both my sons were born there.
