Opinions Please - .45 ACP Mistake

The other day, I found approximately 100 H&G 68s already sized and lubed so I decided to load them up before switching out die heads on the Dillon 550.

My standard load for the #68s has been 5.4 gr. of W/W 231 @ an OAL of 1.250"-1.260" since the 1980s. Familiarity breeds complacency... So, I dumped 100 primers into my flipper then into my primer tube. loaded a few rounds, checked my powder charge and OAL which were fine. I quickly loaded the .45 ACP ammo because I wanted to switch over to 9 mm.

I always follow the "only one container of powder and one type of primer on the bench, at a time" rule. As I was cleaning up in preparation for the switch over I realized that I had loaded the 100 rounds using Winchester LP magnum primers instead of regular LP primers!

Are these safe to shoot in my 5" steel 1911s or should I pull them down? How much will the magnum primers increase pressure over the standard primers? Thanks for your input, Treetop

A load like that, I wouldn't worry about it one bit. Maybe your velocities will be a little higher, but certainly not dangerous.

I don't think they will be over pressure, just somewhat hotter than you are used to.
Your standard load is below max so the difference in primers should not put you into dangerous territory. At the very worst it might be a +P.
Any good 1911 should eat those without issue.

I loaded hundreds of 45s with 5.5 gr. of 231and Wolf magnum primers because that's all I had at the time with no problems.

Your charge of 231 is not max. You will get a bit higher velocity, but the load is still safe and should shoot well.

The worst that could happen is the hammer strike may not set off those primers with a thicker cup.
All things considered, its no big deal.

No problem since Winchester Large Pistol primers can be used for either standard or magnum loads.

Reread the Winchester packaging. Their Large Pistol primers are universal and are intended to be used with either regular or Magnum loads.

I've never seen a WLP "magnum" primer. WLP's are large pistol primers for both magnum and standard loads.

I would go with them as long as your loads aren't max i doubt you will have a problem. I don't have a 45 yet but from the post it doesn't sound like these are hot.

Back during the big primer shortage of a few years ago, for some reason the local gun club was able to get magnum primers long after the regular primers dried up. Half the club was using them as a straight across replacement for their reloading, and no one reported ill effects.

I use WLP in all of my handgun loads. They are a tad warmer than most standard primers but you won't get into a safety issue with them.

As far as using LPP that are said to be "magnum" ( other brands). I did an experiment in my 45ACP some time back & while I used mid range loads, they did fine for me. I don't remember all the details of the results at the time, and just which manf. "LPP Mag" primers I used, ( I think it was CCI), but they all went OK for me.

I would say "shoot them! with no concern, as well.

Just shoot em and consider it a small lesson learned. There is no safety issue using those primers with that load IMHO.
