Hi,I ran across a Pedersoli Sharps with this case size 45 2 3/10 ,does anyone know what this equates to 45-70,45-90 or what?Thanks

45-70 is 2.1" so 2.3" is probably 45-90.

My 45-90 is stamped 45 2.4 from Csharps arms. Im thinking 2.3 would be 45-85. This was the original way of designating cartridge on rifles caliber, case length, and bullet weight. Hence the 45-2.1 500 or 45 2.4 350 or 550

45-85 was/is still a 2.4" case but with less powder and a larger bullet.
Winchester made a lot of those odd ones during their prime years.

But jj500 why dont you contact Pedersoli???
There is no such thing as a 2.3" .45 case so my bet is a mislabeled 2.4" ie a 45-90 chambered rifle.

You might want to make a chamber cast to verify the chamber is 2.4 long might save 2.4 length cases not chambering

Pedersoli never made a Sharps in 45-60!
Only place that cartridge was used was in the Winchester 1876 repeater.

See post #6 it is indeed a 45-90 2.4" ie 2 4/10" chambered rifle.

The 45-60 case is a shortened 45-70 case length being around 1.89 inches. We have an original and a repro and they both will not chamber a 45-70 case but 1.9 inch cases will. But we trim them to 1.89 and happily launch 300-350 PB slugs at all sorts of targets.

Maybe getting off the subject a bit but I have in the past "speculated" that a 45/60 case would be a neat smokeless round for shooting low pressure loadings. It would seem to me that the full(er) shorter case would be ideal for a lighter 45/70 class load when using smokeless vs the full size 45/70 case with air space and for folks wanting a loaded down BP load it would serve that purpose without resorting to using fillers, just my thinking on this and it's something I have discussed before but never got around to cutting back any 45/70 cases to try it. Then there is also the issue of shooting the shorter case in the 45/70 chamber but that's no different than shooting 45/70 in a 45-90 chamber which seems to work quite well even if there is a slight accuracy penalty, in doing this I have found any accuracy loss to be negligible for all but exacting target shooting. This is of course using jacketed bullets as I would have concerns about lead shaving with cast.
