45 ACP Mauser 98

It takes me a while to get things off the bench. This project is almost there, it's a "Why Not" project. I shortened a badly pitted vz24 by 1.2 inches, made a firing pin that would allow me to assemble the shroud and cocking piece then install the striker spring and screw on the "striker spring seat." Without this it would be nearly impossible to assemble, with this, it easy. I milled a retainer for a 1911 magazine, added a side swing safety, added adjustment screws to the military trigger, which now let off at ~2.5lbs with almost no over travel and turned the barrel from a Green Mountain blank. The stock is a Weatherby reject from CaliCo.

It's fun to shoot, but it doesn't feed well if there are more than 5 rounds in the magazine, but who cares. My mentor doesn't like pistol cartridges in rifles, but when I told him it was a purpose built rifle designed to kill tin cans he blessed it. :) I call it The 45 Mauser. What do you think?

Impressive workmanship! Lots of thought and engineering went into that rifle. I can't quite imagine why it would favor having only 5 rounds in the magazine, but that's what most Mausers hold anyway. Looks like lots of fun.

Modified original. I shortened it and worked on the hook so the cartridge would pop up easier. There is no real taper in a 45 ACP to help with feeding and you need to carry the cartridge over the locking lug channel (open space) and straight into the chamber.

More rounds in the magazine make the top round nosedive excessively. Fewer rounds leave less gap between the feeding round and the one below it, making it more likely to feed. It does not dip as far down before moving forward. Compare the gap when the magazine holds seven rounds versus say three.

It is well known that the bullets impact higher and higher on the frame ramp as each successive round feeds in 1911s. The thing is 1911s have a frame ramp to help with feeding.

Started one a while back using a 93 action. Found that the square bottom bolt will not work with a 1911 mag. Next step is to round the bottom of the bolt to see if it will feed. I cut the bolt so it is hidden under the extractor ring. Lots of fun shortening the firing pin to make it work. Took about 3/4" out of the frame where the thumb cut is for stripper clip. Need to find a piece of wood to make a stock.

Exactly! I built up the feed ramp and did my best to modify the extractor so the rounds would pop up under it. It works okay, but I don't think Paul Mauser ever intended someone to adapt John Browning's pistol magazine to his M98. :)

Food for thought: A 44MAG fits a Smidt-Rubin rifle bolt 100%.
So a Desert Eagle mag + modified mag well and a new barrel.

That's awesome. I have a Savage with a single shot follower, a 45 acp barrel, and a suppressor on it. It's one of my favorite pdog killing rifles. I use 45 super brass for hot loads it's amazing what it will do.....it makes a better 300blk than a 300blk.

Thank you for the accolades! It was fun to build and it was a hoot to shoot it in a finished state. It definitely shoots within minute of tin can and there are no cans that are safe in my county now. :)

How did your Type38 wind up with an 8x57 barrel?I had a Shaw 8x57 barrel for a 98 Mauser laying around and a shot out 6.5 type 38 so they got combined. It works with shorter oal like American factory loads. I used the Hornady 125gr and then 150gr for deer hunting with it. The reciever inside shoulders had to be opened for the less tapered Mauser case but it feeds and shoots great. It will shoot normal fmj loads but not as a repeater. The barrel is 16-1/2", earning it the nickname "Cannon" at the deer lease[emoji16]
