Need advice on 410 load. I am trying to load a 410 load using Remington STS 2 .5" with H110 dropping exactly 15.2 grains with a orange PC 1/2 oz wad topped off with 1/2 oz of #4. With this combination I'm coming up about 1/8" shy to get a good crimp. They all want to fold and cave in. I have measured powder and shot weights that the press is throwing and they are exact. Does anyone see any issue with the components or have a fix other than using a over powder card? God bless.

Find yourself a punch that will do the correct size for .410 to make wads.

Then try a milk jug (Plastic) A milk Jug (waxed paper, thickest) and some of the thin cardboard that package pop cans in 12 and 24 packs.

See which one does the trick.

I had the same issue with a proven recipe in 12 ga with brand new hulls, good wads. But being a cautious sort I reduced the powder a couple of grains, ended up in the same place.

White milk jut overshot card solved it. Left crimps looking factory.

You just need to find the right thickness.

I have a couple of sets of punches. Ones I use the most were cheap gasket punches from Harbor Freight. They come fairly dull, you can sharpen them up a bit pretty easily.

I like the end grain of a short piece of 4x4 for my block.

I've been loading Nobel hulls that had the same problem. I bored out the shot hole in the MEC bar to put more shot in. Got it up to 9/16 oz.

Put a Cherrio or piece of puffed wheat or puffed rice cereal on top of the shot before you crimp. It will take up the extra space and not add any weight to the load. I've been doing that with my 20 ga. 3/4oz. loads till I run out of my 7/8 wads. Works great.

Over shot cards will fix you right up.

Many ways to fix this and all of the above will work. IMHO the extra discs in the bottom of the shot cup provide the best base for the shot. My other alternative would be to add more shot like upnorth did. You are below my load of 16 gr of H110 so the little extra bit of shot wouldn't be a problem.

Where does one get 2.75" .410 hulls? In Canada I can only find 2.5" and 3".

I punch my discs from the cardboard used for the primer packs. Works perfectly. Perfect crimps.

Ah, alright then. Thought there was something new in the .410 world for a moment.

if you crimp is adjusted properly you should be able to make a perfect crimp on a empty hull
