Bear season here starts on August 1st. The wife and I were sitting in the dining room eating breakfast and drinking coffee one Saturday in mid July when a very, very large black bear walked up our driveway toward the house. We had seen this bear several times on trail cams around our property so I was already excited about the upcoming season. He was about 40 feet from the house when I walked out on the porch with coffee cup in hand and politely told him that if he did that again in three weeks, the roasts were going to be delicious. We never saw him in the neighborhood again. I think he knew he was about to drop a notch on the food chain as he slowly ambled back down our driveway.

We have a neighborhood bear who visits occasionally. He plays with the neighbor lady's Jack Russell terrier and terrorized the pit bull at the end of the road. We don't feed the birds or our pets outdoors, and keep our garbage can locked in a shed attached to the kitchen, so he gives us no trouble unless cooking and the kitchen exhaust fan is on.

Bear story? ok , but I don't have pic's. Two weeks ago I was driving Rt17 in southern part of NY about 9PM local and BooBoo the bear came running across the road, I hit the brakes hard but had nowhere to go I tried to miss him but caught him on the right hip with the right corner of my(plastic) bumper. I went back looking and didn't see him or any blood but there was bear pee down the side of my truck, hope I scared it out of him instead of knocking it out!

Lots of inexpensive guided bear hunts here in north central Saskatchewan, both black and cinnamon colored bears, hunting over bait for some big ones.

Last year, I was in Yakutat on a job, and had a BIG!!!!! male grizz come in to the salmon carcasses while I was landing the barge. Got stopped, grabbed the rifle, and up on the barge. Mate sez 'it went into the alders across the parking lot'. Down the ramp, into the parking lot, looking. Hear branches breaking, a bear sounding off, bear coming out of the alders, 30 yards away across barren ground. I'm here to tell ya, EVERY bear you see at 30 yards through a scope is BIG!!!! I had no one to grab me and say "that ain't the big one - don't shoot" I dumped her. She squared at 6.5. The male I wanted was probably 9 ft. Can't figger out how to upload photos...

In Marines when we flew to Japan we stopped in Anchorage. I was looking out at the sunset [emoji560] and backed up to see better when I felt fur. I looked up to see I was under a huge polar bear [emoji199] that had claws at least 6-8 inches long; with fangs another 4-6”, and paws at least a foot across. Looked to be close to 15 feet tall. Sure glad he was stuffed!

Yuma coin and gun had a stuffed cinnamon bear maybe 4 1/2-5 ft tall. Asked him if they hunted it with a K-Bar. Owner laughed at me and said that it could break an elks neck with one swat!

These bears were .. ummm.. errrrr.. yea that.. I photo’ed them on the copper river delta. I got about as close as I dared and used my Nikon to get the shots, but I must tell you, I never would have gotten the 200 yards I did if I wasn’t on my 4-Wheeler. These guys can flat out run. The blonder one, was the female, and was a big bear, but the male was a monster. the muscle definition made him Arnold swartchabear.. the pictures were taken in May before there was any real weight gain. there is no gun you can carry when walking with these guys that makes you feel safe. The hair on the back of your neck just stands at attention.. I watched these guys for almost 30 min or more. They were very preoccupied in .. well.. yea that.. pretty amazing really..

Then there was this guy...

242883

while guiding fisherman on the same copper river delta. We were drifting down with the current in our jet boat with the motor off, came around a narrow bend in the river near where it connects with the copper river, and this guy was in the middle of the river just standing there. I had one hand on my 44 and the other was quickly trying to get the motor back tilted down so I could start the boat, and one of my customers snapped this pic with his iPhone 2 as we floated by.. it’s the only pic that wasn’t blurry, but the customer sent me this pic later.. as a memento of the trip... the bear did not make a move, but he obviously was not happy about us drifting through his fishing hole... in all the time I guided in that area, I never had to even fire a warning shot, and only pulled my pistol once, just cuz I was a chicken. That doesn’t mean that others weren’t killed or mauled. Just means that I was lucky.

I killed one with a van in state college pa. dodge van going 40 mph. I'm sure someone could calculate the energy. i feel it was way more effective than the 10mm.

Marko, not that I think it should ever be tried on purpose, but would a baseball bat to the skull of a bear kill it or otherwise make it change its attitude?

Took mine in the late 1960's, with My Dad's OM Ruger .44Mag. Behind a pack of dogs. Young Legs, Good eyes. Took 3 shots, 1st 2 into the tree. Third into the Bear. Lots of things were legal in CA. Before the GCA '68 and nanny brown's first term, his 2nd was worse.

Probably just anger it.. the skull is like armor plating.. bullets bounce, and I imagine you can’t swing a bat hard enough to do more then make him even more angry. He would probably say, ok, you had your shot.. now it’s my turn.

I keep thinking of that idiot, Timothy Treadwell or whatever his name was, living in bear territory up there in Alaska. Bears were his beautiful friends until he finally got eaten.

Montana is getting over-run with grizzlies, in my favorite elk hunting area the last couple years there have been confirmed sightings and a few encounters with elk hunters being run off their kill site. I have yet to see a grizzly but last season my son and I were hunting as we came down a ridge I noticed a tree that was missing a lot of bark and went to check it out. This tree had been marked more than once, and the last time was quite recent. My son is 6'2" and you can see the top most mark is around 3 feet up from his hand. He asked me if I thought the bear stood flat footed and marked that or had climbed, I told him I was sure it was flat footed and he had quite the shudder :)

The next morning I was hunting alone and left the truck a little before dawn and was hiking up my favorite ridge in the dark thinking about that tree. About shooting light I had elk tracks everywhere and the odor was so strong I could taste it so I just stopped and waited as I knew there were a lot of elk on the move. I stood still for maybe 10-15 minutes just watching and listening as I had good shooting light. Out of the corner of my eye I caught a movement off to my right, as I slowly turned my head I saw a lion about 40 yards away that was following the elk tracks. He hadn't noticed me until I turned and the lion about turned itself inside out turning around and just flat disappeared. It happened so fast I really didn't have time to react, I was just so amazed that he was there one second and gone about a half second later. I waited a minute or two then walked over to where I had seen the lion and was bent over looking for a track in the brushy snow, about that time a semi or snow plow went over the bridge in the valley below me and made a loud racket. When I heard that noise I just new I was about to be attacked by something and will freely admit "my heart was in my throat", it about gave me the big one:)

I continued up the ridge even more alert than I had been before and I did bump into a decent bull a few minutes later and never got a shot at him. While thinking about all that had happened in the last few minutes I realized that between the wolves, lions, and grizzlies the last thing in the world a elk has to worry about is an old man with a gun.

I shot this one (my 3rd grizz, but 1st with cast) 2 years ago with a Ruger .41 mag BH (NOE 41-251-WFN). Fortunately clipped the spine, so it didn't go far. These things hang on to life rather tenaciously and die harder than blackies.

My son just got his 1st over memorial Day weekend (although not with cast). The bear was guarding a moose kill. They spotted it from the opposite side of the valley and snuck up to 130 yards. His Montana M1999 in .300 Win mag did the trick.

We always have to remember in Montana, at best we are #5 on the food chain!

Thanks. We are very proud of the young man. He is currently an Army Captain and doesn't get a lot of time off with his crazy schedule. I'm really glad he checked a grizz off his bucket list.
