Been playing with my Rossi single shot in the Ruski Shortski. Shoots nicely with the 123 gr. J-words. Also shot some .312 dia. 100 gr. plated bullets from Berry's on top of 5 gr. of Trail Boss. The Trail Boss loads sound & recoil about like a 22 mag. and shoot into about 3/4" at 50 yards. Only problem is that it leaves a fair bit of soot on the cases & in the bore. I'm thinking that a heavier boolit will help it burn cleaner and maybe be slightly less noisy.
A couple months ago my dad sent me a single cavity Ideal 311241 mold so I thought I would try that in it. The bore slugs .310, so I was hoping for them to drop out of the mold at .311 so I could just tumble lube them. I finally got around to casting some last night. What a nice mold! They drop out at .310 - .311 on the base band with WW alloy so I'm hoping they will work. Haven't weighed them but they should be right around 150 grains. Being a plain base I am only looking to get a load somewhere around 1,000 fps. for plinking and small game loads. Thought I would try the 5 gr. of Trail Boss and work from there.
I have seen some posts mentioning 6 gr. of Red Dot also. Anyone know the velocity of that load? Might have to try some of that, too.
Being a single cavity it is slow going casting these. However, this mold cast good boolits right from the start. I mean, the very first boolit out of the mold was a keeper! In about 30 - 40 minutes of casting time I ended up with 103 good boolits and ony 1 reject that was due to me stopping the lead flow to soon and not getting a puddle on the sprue so the base didn't fill out. If this boolit shoots good I will be on the hunt for a double cavity.
