I just bought a .54 TC Grey Hawk, which is a stainless version of a New Englander. Anyone know what the max charge is for round ball and conicals for these?

.

120gr (edit) FFg for any projectiles, according to the maker

Thanks. Since this is a .54 it looks like the max is 120 grains.

Have a original T/c Instruction Booklet in hand. Don't see that there is a difference between Hawkin Renegade or New Englander.
1._A separate charging listing did exist for the Cherokee & Seneca 32-36 cal (FFF-G)
2._The Smooth bore 56 cal. (FF-G) 100 gr Max
3._Otherwise 110 gr Max (FF-G) was suggested for 45 & 50 cal patch /ball . 54 & 58 cal patch/ball is capable of shooting the larger charge of 120 gr. (FF-G)

120 grains of FFg Goex under 455 grains of lead, you're going to know it when you touch one off :bigsmyl2:

Yeah. I cast a bunch of round balls and Lee REAL bullets for this rifle today. Hoping I can get the REALs to shoot. Supposed to be 380 grains, but looks like the came out around 375. In a lighter rifle I am sure the recoil will be noticeable. If the REAL won't shoot I guess I will be on the hunt for a maxi ball mold in this caliber.

My .54 New Englander had the QLA counterbore and was making me wanta say bad words so I got it reworked into something else. But if it hadn't had a messed up QLA I would have hot loaded the TC Maxihunters.

Shot it today and it did really well. Went all the way up 120 grains of back mz with good accuracy. The reals did great with 80 and 100 grains. I have a bit more fine tuning to do, but this thing is ready for the hunt.

My 'treestand gun' is a New Englander in .50 Cal. I generally get close shots, a rb over 70 grains of black, or 250 REAL over 80 grains, has always done the trick! She wears 'Fire sights' for old eyes and low light shooting. hc18flyer

The local muzzleloader season for elk and deer run concurrent, so my default choice needs to be a load that is legal and appropriate for the bigger of the two. The state dictates that I have to use conicals in 50 cal, up to me with 54 cal or better. Since the area I like to hunt has some more open terrain and elk are spookier than deer, I really need to be able to reach out to 75 to 100 yards. I have more shooting to do to really see, but thus far experience at the range and ballistics suggest that means conicals are where it is at. My shoulder would prefer that I could get away with round ball loads, but it is what it is.

One thing for certain, that New Englander will let you load 'em up.
