GENTS, the current Marlin website says the the CB in 45-70 has a twist rate of 20-1. Mine measures 16-1 as I measured. Has Marlin made a change? I bought it in 2003. On advice from the gunshop I started with 405 gr. Rem. JFN & Accurate 2015. The rifle loves 46 gr. 2015 & the 405 Rem. The second question is can I load the 300 gr. Rem JHP to FAST?? The 405 is an inch long and the 300 is 0.822" long. Tried 38,39,& 40 grains of Accurate 5744. Didn't have my crony so I'm guessing the MV is 1800/2000 fps range. all three loads look like a shotgun at 200 yards. The first three with the 38 grains were on the & in the 5" bull but after that they sprayed out to about 2 feet in a mostly round group on all three loads. I'm thinking I need to back down to 36.5 , 37, & 37.5 grains. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Mygila AKA My Mangum LAs Cruces.

Don't have a loading manual in front of me but that "sounds" like a lot of 5744; not necessarily unsafe but maybe just too high a pressure for good accuracy. You know that a given velocity can be achieved using a "little" of a fast powder or "a larger quantity" of a slower powder. Why not try the same volumes of AA2015 to see how it shoots? If it groups well, you can maybe work it up from there. Whenever the accuracy goes bad, just switch to a slower powder and work up till you get the accuracy and velocity you want.

All 1895 Cowboy rifles have 1:20 twist. The 2001 catalog(first year of production) right up to the 2008 catalog list the 1895CB as well as all other 1895's with the 1:20 twist.

can't speak for that bullet but with the 405 grain was trying to work up a smokeless load for my Pedersoli 1-18 twist with 5744 30 gr + loads I could not keep them on a 4"x4' sheet of plywood 27- 28 gr shot great I think I was shooting that bullet too fast for the twist
ACCURATE list 36.7starting 40.8 max 300hdy jhp in marlin

for trapdoor they list 300 lead plain base 27.9 - 31
you may want to go down there & work back up all the velocity in the world ain't gonna be of any help if it is all over the place

something to think about

Jon K , & Guys,
Thanks for the advice. I'm all ready planning on using a less powder. BTW, that ram looks like the one on our range. That's a good group. I like the soule tang sight on your rifle in the picture. Thats a good idea. I'll have to try that someday. Take care and vote . Mygila aka Myron Mangum, Las Cruces, NM

Hey, that sort of rude post is not the way we do business here!

Cut that out, where are your manners, Sir.

That is not a good way to start out at a new site.

Welcome to the site. Sorry that "your" first post went off track a bit.

We are happy to have new folks, and we all try very hard to be
friendly and polite. You will find a lot of good information from
really smart and experienced people here. I have really learned a
lot here and you can too. :D

Again - welcome, I'm glad you didn't really start off that way, I was
pretty disappointed at the post, glad it was a "joke" -- your friend
has a strange sense of humor.
