View Full Version : Keeping the grit out

I'm ready to smooth up the bolt raceways on my Mauser 98 and don't want to remove the barrel. Thought I'd put a rubber plug in the chamber, then fill up the locking lug recess area with cotton. When I'm done polishing the raceways, spray a little denatured alcohol into the cotton and then carefully pull it out. Repeat with clean cotton until no grit appears, then flood the lug recess area with alcohol a few more times to make sure.

Or maybe a Dewey rifle lug recess cleaning kit to remove any remaining grit?

Slot a wooden dowel for the cotton dental packing plugs to clean the lug recess. Remove the stock and flush out the polishing compound with carb cleaner or whatever. Take care to keep the lapping compound from the rear of the bolt lugs.

Thanks, TbG. I'll see if I can get a few cotton dental packing plugs when I go in for my teeth cleaning next week.

Do the job, then spray the bejeebers out of it with carburetor cleaner.

Indeed. No need to over think this.

I would spray it out real well first to remove all oil/grease so the grit has less to adhere to. Make it easier to clean when your done.

I agree . Just clean throughly when done
