I got a small bottle of Breakfree CLP at a yard sale today. I've never used it that I recall, but I may have years ago. Does anyone favor it? It has a unique smell, I kinda like it. It freed up a rusty adjustable wrench I bought in short order.

I use it on all my BP revolvers and rifles. It's really good stuff.

I've been using it for quite a few years, inside and out, works very good for me, finally bought a large bottle of it because of the times I've run out and then couldn't find any at the store.

Thanks for the replies, how does it do in cold weather?

It will get a little sticky. I switch to the LAW lube in the winter months if I want to shoot.

Works good on the loaders, presses and lubesizers.

If you bought a recently made bottle it's good stuff. Before they reformulated it was garbage. I swore off it years ago because it would separate and become almost impossible to use.

Picked up 2 aerosol cans at wally. Much better than what it was back in 81 or 82 when it first came on the market. I use it mostly on firearms and my presses, but it has wide application on lots of stuff around the house an garage.

Has been my goto gun oil for 30 years. I have a gallon jug of it.

Works ok for me but not better than other stuff, I think. As a one stop cleaner, lube it does good but I'm not sure it works better than Ballistol. I found Ballistol less sticky in cooler weather.

I like the older CLP the best, before Safariland took over though it does work fine too. I really like that odd smell the older Break Free has! The new stuff is odorless. I use it from time to time to reminisce. Anymore thought i clean with Ed's Red and lube with 30wt oil and my competition guns get Slide Glide on sliding surfaces.

I got lucky the other day and bought 3 big pump bottles of the the old Break Free of Ebay.

Not since it gummed up a Beretta 70 and a Remington 1100 on the same day in February near Muleshoe, Texas back in the day. Too much sand and cold, I guess.

This has to be the older stuff I got, it's just a pocket sized bottle. So far I like it. Only gave .25 for it, nearly full.

It's a good lube for auto-loader slides and rails. The key is to use it sparingly. I use it quite a bit.

Used gallons of it in the military. Always had to shake it up before squirting it out of the bottle.

Just bought a little aerosol can of it a couple of months ago when my old army supply ran out.

I like it. But I don't do extensive tests or research, so YMMV.

Haven't tried it in the desert, but it does well to -15F to -20F deer hunting in MI.

I've used it for years too ... our Canadian military used the old, original version for cleaning everything from handguns and rifles up to artillery. I'm still working on a gallon jug that a friend gifted me ...

I used Breakfree for a long time and still have some. I replaced it with Clenzoil and never looked back.

At the range, it’s a great carry along for a quick spray at the end of use for a faster cleaning when I get to the workbench. It’s especially helpful for a BCG that’s been ridden hard.

On the bench, Ed’s Red, kroil, and hoppe#9 are the staples. I’ve been trying BoreTech Eliminator lately...the jury’s still out on that one.

Breakfree CLP I have used for years. Mostly for firearms but have used it to free the joints up on pliers, side cutters and a lot of hand held tools even channel locks. Makes a good lube when sharpening knives axes and the like. Still have some LAW medium I use as well. Works great on lubing the channels on slides on semi auto handguns. Frank

Preciate all the replies. Guess I better not fall in love with it if they changed the formula.

No better or worse than the good ole hardware store 3and 1 oil for most things the average gun owner needs .

I like CLP Breakfree as well. The older stuff. We used it in the armory in the Navy and the Air Force. I like the smell. Used some last night and a minute ago to lube door hinges.

Used it by the gallon... it was almost the magical cure for all weapon cleaning and lube in the 80's, what was lacking in dissolving factor was made up by a judicious application of elbow grease to get the weapon turned back into the armory before chow...

The original formula tasted better in my coffee, the reformulated not so much but both worked as well as to be expected. I still have a stash in the garage.

I've been using it for 40 years, but ONLY because Uncle insists on it. There are far, far better lubricants available, although the current formulation is better than the original. The PTFE (Teflon) used to separate from the carrier in the original formulation, so you had to shake the snot out of it to try to mix it back up. I still think that it truly lacks adequate lubrication properties for extreme hot weather, especially in automatic weapons. I vastly prefer something thicker like TW-25B, LSA, or LSA-T for military weapons. I pretty much rely on TW-25B for my personal guns for lubrication. I use other things for cleaning, depending on the application.

BazooI have used it on and off for decades. For items to be included for deer/elk hunting, I believed that the odor would be a problem - that is, give me away as being in the area. . . . Good news. The odor disappears in a few days exposure to air.

Hope this helps.

I like it to breakdown old hardened oil in older rifles. I just slop it on/in and leave a day or so. The old hardened oils come loose more quickly. Other stuff works but this Breakfree is mild and won't hurt anything. A toothbrush scrub and a few shots of brake cleaner gets the worst of the old crud. Makes diassembly easier for a real detailed cleaning. Odor much less and not offensive as a lot of other stuff.

It's as good as most but I liked outers nitro solvent for bore cleaning ,just can't find it any more back to 009.

I've been using it for a lot of years. I think it works just fine and dandy but as indicated above, it's not a grease lube. I still use grease on my slides and rails at the end of a cleaning job.

In cold weather, the aerosol cans can get slow so I move a can into the house over the winter months.

I've used the "old stuff" for years. Protected my guns when necessity dictated storing them in my Brother-in-Law's basement for ~2 years. New formula? Like with the "new" Hoppe's #9? Does it still work as well as it did?

Robg, I have used outers nitro solvent and I liked it. Been a few years now. I hope they didn't stop making it.

to me the newer breakfree is better. No more shaking for 5 minutes to mix back up.. great for general oiling, cleaning use better things for long term storage

Back in the '80s I was using some breakfree clp after cleaning and was lubricating my rifles and handguns when a friend stopped by our place. He smelled the aroma of the breakfree and commented that he wished that he had some aftershave with that smell. While the odor is not unpleasant, I had never thought of it in those terms. Big Boomer

I have a small can that I'll use occasionally. I prefer Kroil, Ballistol and RemOil, and Hoppes #9.

WD40 is used for door hinges now.

I just used the clp for the first time, to lube my 1911. I'll see how it does. I've decided, I like the smell.

I don't think I'll give up my 3in1 oil but it's nice to try other stuff.

Thanks for everyone's experiences and replies.

In olden times, when the LAPD Harbor Range was open to the Public, they Posted a sign after they started issuing Beretta's, that read:

OIL YOUR SLIDE OR YOU WILL DIE !

Apparently they also issued Break free for Firearms Maintenance. Said to oil slide every 3 weeks.
I have 3 bottles of the old break free.
They are all filled with; BALLISTOL.

That's interesting walks, thanks for sharing. Beretta don't run well dry I take it then? There's been times I've went several months carrying my 1911 without oiling it or firing it, or even checking the chamber. Every instance it's fired without hiccup.

You mean CLP.
DONT use CLR, its a chemical agent that dissolves calcium and lime deposits in sinks and pipes and I'm sure it will be corrosive on your gun.

Many years ago I got 4 1 gallon jugs of the stuff from a friend who retired from the Navy. I am still using it and it still works fine. We clean and repair over 100 guns a year and so far no one has complained and no rusty guns have ever f=come back.

I prefer Slip 2000 (specifically EWL 30), but have successfully used Breakfree many times in the past.

And at least my Beretta doesn't like to be run dry. Keep it properly sprung, lubricated, and fed by not-garbage mags and it's a hard gun to stop.

During pistol qualification in the Army, we would have 15 or so soldiers lined up trying to shoot, and a Range Officer would be walking down the line with a spray bottle of Break-Free, spraying the actions of the M9s because they would start seizing up.

Our unit armorer was an idiot who insisted that unless a weapon was bone-dry, it did not pass inspection. So a couple of guys kept little bottles of CLP with them to lube their weapons before going into the field.

Break Free is my favorite crud remover, especially suppressed guns can collect real hard to dissolve deposits quickly.

It's not my favorite lubricant though. But it does lube, too.

I use it on my 45 and no complains. It still cycled in -20 this winter, but only shot 2 mags worth, before coming back inside. Was trying a Nosler hollowpoint and just wanted to make sure it worked.
