Rifle Barrel Recomendations

I have decided to convert my Ruger RPR in 7.62x51 Creedmore to the magical 6.5 Creedmore caliber.

I'm looking at a Krieger 7.5 twist 26 inch barrel.

Other barrel maker, twist or length suggestions?

Mostly killing paper. Possibly some hunting.

Just bored want to do something different.

What is your weight goal? I’ve been using Proof Research for my last 2 builds and they are more accurate than I am. I’ve got a Kreiger on another and Shilen on another. All more accurate than I am. I guess I’d lean towards whichever had your desired profile and twist rate in stock. I don’t shoot well enough to tell you to buy x brand of barrel.

You can't go wrong with a Kreiger barrel.

Kriegers are very good also lilja, Pac Nor hart and McGowen are highly rated. I believe G David Tubbs used lilja for a ling time. I use kriegers on my ARs and M1As service rifles.

Kriegers are in stock as opposed to 4 months wait. And they are in the top 4 used precision rifles PRS and NRL

Truth is, nowadays, all barrels are pretty much created equal.
Hard to find a bad one.

That was my first stop on my barrel education.

It looks like Proof Research steel barrels are about the same price.

When I switched out barrels I use
Pac-Nor never been disappointed
I have a 358 Win and a 3 groove 280 Ackley Improved
and for my AR-10 in 6.5 Creedmoor I went with Noveske
that barrel is a 8 twist and I have yet to not be able to shoot
a 5 shot group that is under a inch scary accurate
I shoot from 107 gr to 156 gr bullets for deer hunting I
use a 143 gr Honady ELD-X works real good

I jumped on the Krieger bandwagon in the late 80's. Since then I have chambered and installed a couple of hundred Kreigers. For Accuracy I have found some that maybe equal but none that have been superior.

Out of all the Krieger's I have chambered and installed two have had accuracy issues. One had POI that walked and one didn't group to expectations. Krieger stood behind them one hundred percent. While I have used other premium barrel makers less I have had or know of issues with them that have not been resolved with the same level of satisfaction. A couple of them I flat refuse to use do to them not standing behind their product.

I do expect 1/2 MOA or better for 10 shot groups for match rifles and 1/2 MOA for 5 shot groups for hunting rifles. I did build two 375 H&H's that will hold 1/2 MOA at 300 meters. These were the only two 375's that I have chambers. I did build one 416 Remington Mag that will only hold 3/4 MOA but in that case not sure if the bullets, brass and shooter are not the limiting factor. It's light and it kicks.

I have found that cut rifling appears to have a slight edge in barrel life.

I've had several Krieger barrels on my service & match rifles, shot high master with them. Also have Obermeyer barrels that shoot every bit as good. Steve Satern out of Iowa makes top notch barrels as well. As stated above, lots of really high quality barrel makers out there.

Bartlein barrels. I have used Shilen, Rock Creek, McGowen, Douglas, Shaw, Green Mountain. I will be using a Bartlein for my next.

The best for me has been Krieger. 224 was on the shelf at Krieger. 243 was on the shelf at Bruno. I used quality smiths to install and they shoot fantastic. A dozen other guns for friends that Krieger installed. Easy load work up and shoot great for long range varmint, and hunting applications.

waksupi is correct. I have used barrels from every manufacturer out there and the truth is for virtually no waiting time, fast delivery and as accurate as any other barrel I've used.......Douglas air gauged.

if you stick with known name quality makers, maybe all barrels are sort of created equal, buy off brand cheap stuff, who knows what you'll get. after buying a quality barrel, a quality installation is just as important.

I decided on a Proof Research 24" stainless steel barrel. Twist is 1 in 8.
Around $450 to my door.

I like Krieger but barrel maker is only 50% the chamber and crown gotta be done right.

I think they are all good. Typically if I find a Shilen in stock at Brownells that is what I use.
