I figuire this is a good place to start with my project.
I have a Ruger M77 Target in 25-06. Not my favourite rifle, kinda boring, hits everything I aim at.
I want to patch it.
I am thinking using the Lee C285-130R as the base mold. I am then thinking of sizing it in steps to .251.
Long and thin. I cannot jump size it like the .312 to .308. I am concerned about deflection during sizing.
I am partial to Lee molds.
Any other ideas out there?

You might want to start with a .258 mould then size to .251. I think a 130 gr sized to .251 would take a 1 in 8 or tighter twist to stabilize the bullet. I have trouble getting 120gr to work in my 1 in 10 twist Douglas unless I really push them.

Now, finding a mold is an issue.
I like sizing ordinary lead molds. I feel the lube lands holds the paper.
I am contacting Lee, it would cost me as much to have Lee make one as it would to get an iron mold plus handles. I am also very comfortable with aluminum molds
Lee says they will take 8 months, maybe someone here can make me an aluminum mold. I sure have seen some good work.

NEI could make you one, but you said you don't want to be spendy: THAT I can understand! Maybe try to find a 6mm/.244 mold for sale used and patch that?

Pat at Lee got in touch with me on sizing their .289-7mm. We have both agreed it is a no-go. Too much sizing, too much risk of deformation.
Now to find a mold that throws .257. That I can size to .251 and then wrap and size to diameter.
Now to find some specs and maybe get one cut by Lee. That would be as expensive as getting a made up one plus handles. I am also used to aluminum molds.

A 6mm can be bumped up to .251, if you can make up a bump die. Dont think it will work otherwise.

Paper patch molds can be made with a drill (of the correct diameter - with a .250 bore I'd guess at .252. If you pre drill with a slightly smaller drill, a 1/4" drill should be just about perfect.). You must reform the nose to the ogive you desire, and resharpen it. For .25 cal. a .22 cal. set of mold blocks should be fine for a platform. Drills leave a bit of a rough finish, which holds the paper just fine.

Wow, mayhaps I can find someone to make one for me.
I never thought of that.
