'62 Cushman Super Eagle then a Honda 305 Scrambler. I had more fun on that Honda, streets, woods and trail riding, than any other vehicle I ever owned. I learned every mile of back road, dirt road, creekbed, river, every foot of railroad track, from the Alabama line across the southern most counties in Mississippi to Bay St. Louis. I also got away from cops sooooooo many times I would vanish before they even hit the lights. I think I was 19 maybe. I can still remember the sound of those long straight pipes, no other motorcycle sounded like a 305. I kept mine as long as I could still get parts for them but the only time you see one now is in a museum..

Yamaha Twin Jet 100. 9.9 hp, top end was 65 mph, but I managed to squeeze 80 mph out of it a couple of times. Once I sold it, never rode another bike again.

Mine was a 1962 Sears Allstate 250 CC 2 stroke. These were actually made by Puch in Germany, and were one of the earliest 2 strokes to have oil injection. I was 16 years old when I bought it, and rode it to high school when the weather allowed. I sold and re-bought it several times, also had a few minor wrecks with it. It just wouldn't die, and I had to weld the shift lever on when I couldn't get parts. The last guy that bought it from me had it in the bed of his pick up and the truck was stolen and wrecked. The bike was so badly damaged in that wreck that is was scraped.

Not counting the mini-bike with a hot rodded 2hp Briggs & Straton, it was a very abused 1972 Yamaha 650,
that I had a short while before trading it in a new '74 Yamaha 650 that I ended up riding in & out of 10 states.

I was 8 years old in 1973, and my Dad bought a Black Honda Supercub 50cc (just like in the stock photo) for me to ride in a grassy field behind our house. That field seemed like 600 acres in 1973...in reality, it was about 5 acres.

A Harley. I'd never ridden on one before and had the dealer deliver it to my house. We wheeled it up the front steps and put it in the front hallway. That was fifty years ago when I was young and didn't know any better. I ended up riding it down the front steps in neutral and then reading the owners manual and started it up and took it for a ride. I'm surprised I've lived this long.

A Hodaka 100 about 1971. Then a highly modded Hodaka Super Rat. Both bought with yard mowing money. I still keep the endorsement on my license but I haven't owned one since I gradated high school. It seems like riding a buddies street bike about once a year scratches the itch! But I'm like everyone else, if a Harley pulls up next to me at a light I look over at it with jealousy!

In 1964 I was 22, my neighbor taught me to ride on his '57 (I think) XLCH Harley Sportster. Tore it up ,,,,,, fixed it. Bought one from a guy that had a 51 FL Harley, suicide shift, 3 speed, single seat, no saddle bags and a single exhaust. When I got through with it , it had a 4 speed, buddy seat, saddlebags and dual pipes. Oh yeh, and a new paint job. 21 yrs in the Air Force, 3 years without, up until 4-5 yrs (73-74 yrs young) ago sidelined with medical problems I had to stop ridding. I had a '93 FLHTC Electroglide Clasic. Bought it in '97-8 with about 9000 mi on it. I almost cried when they put it on a trailer to take it away. Had almost 90,00 mi on it. Friend had the carb rebuilt ,,,,,,, still riding it. Always had Harleys.

Last bike was KZ1000 chain drive 4 cyl and 4 carbs, lived through that and sold it for $600, and a Marlin 30-30.

My first "motorcycle" was a Briggs 'n Stratton engine that Dad mounted on a bicycle when I was 9 yrs old. Next in line was an old moped - remember the tiny engine with pedals to help out? At 12 yr old I got a 165 Harley. A little 5.5 hp single stroke whose engine would sometimes run backwards if it kicked when cranking. Imagine dropping the clutch in 1st on that. Yep, I did drop bike a couple of times due to that.

When 15 I got my first "real" motorcycle - a 1955 Harley, 74 cu in which was an old cop bike out of Memphis Tenn, suicide clutch, hand shift, kick start. Been on bikes most of my life since.

1st 1996 Suzuki GS500E. Bought with 5k miles sold with 22k on the clock in 1.5 years.
2nd 2005 Honda Spirit 750. Bought with 3k miles sold with 25k in 4 years. Went from KS to MI to Vegas to STL with me.
3rd 2001 Suzuki SV650S. Bought with 3.2k miles sold with 23k in 3 years.
4th 2004 Honda CBR600RR. Bought with 4.6k miles stolen 8 weeks later.
5th 2007 Suzuki SV1000S. Bought with 13k sold with 24k in 1.5 years.
6th 2007 Yamaha FZ1. Bought with 12k sold with 14k in 6 months. Worst mpg ever at 28mpg.
7th 2017 Kawasaki Z900. First new vehicle, first vehicle loan. Stolen with 6k after 1 year.
8th 2011 Triumph Street Triple R. Bought with 8.3k. Current Ride.

Honda Spirit took a lot of abuse with nothing but oil changes. SV650S was rode to hell and back and only replaced the water pump impeller. Great bike. SV1000S pulled like a freight train and sounded like two apes going at it. Loved that bike, still look for a low mileage one every month or so. FZ1 was a proper liter bike with an almost untenable level of power for a 170lb man. Terrible gas mileage, sold it because I commute 9 months of the year on a bike. Z900 was hands down the most well rounded bike. Easy pull slipper clutch, great mpg, and wheelied like nobodys business. Street Triple is proving to be fun, torquey and miserly.

In my late 60s and unfortunately, I haven't gotten my "first motorcycle" yet. :-) I always wanted a nice Harley though . . . . probably a good thing I never got one. I always figured I would probably throw a bedroll on the back and once on the road . . .just keep going! 1969 Kawasaki Mach III H1, 500 cc , triple cylinder , triple carb. , two-stroke.
It developed more horse power than the car I owned that year.
The bike weighed only 384 pounds and had a higher hp to lb ratio of any other machine on the street.
A few runs at the drag strip turned in 1/4 mile runs with 12.4 second / 124 mph times.
I was a happy motorcycle camper with this one. I smoked a lot of Honda's with this one.

As fast as it was I never did like the two stroke oil burning with the gas or how the two stroke engine sounded... After awhile I got a deal on a old 1965 Triumph Tiger T100 , 500 cc , twin cylinder , 4 stroke ....not as fast but it didn't burn oil , sounded and looked good ...
I kept the Kawasaki also ...just for when the need for speed hit me....Sweet Bikes both .

Mid to late 60's Yamaha. I later owned a Honda 125 cc twin. That Honda "could" go on the highway but essentially had to draft a semi to keep up. I would ride the kids around on the BMX track with it and commute. The Honda was supplanted in my affections by a 1966 Triumph TR6R 650 road bike which I rescued from a barn, restored and still own

This was the model of Yamaha. When I got it in the 70's it was beat up pretty badly. I got it functional except for the clutch. Sold it. Kept wiping out trying to slow down for corners without a proper clutch.

Had a good friend who's older brother had the 750 Kawasaki triple. Man that bike could fly. Was set up for strictly drag strip until he flipped it. Then gave it a tank, some lights and rode it on the road.

Funniest thing I ever saw was a guy running the long straight drive from the high school out to the road on one of those Kawasaki racing green triples trying to "pull" the handle bars up to get a wheelie because he didn't know how to do it with the engine and clutch. Shift, yank, zoom. Shift, yank, zoom. Shift, yank, zoom. And out of road to be looking silly on. From the side it was a hoot.

I had a used 1966 Triumph Tiger Cub. 200 cc and 16 horsepower. Worked at GMC Truck&Coach in Pontiac, MI to pay for it. Rode it to school and summer jobs.

I liked to ride it up steep hills and “jump” it at the top. Guess I overdid it because one day I was riding home and the frame broke just behind the steering bearing. Fortunately, I was on a dirt road, no traffic and going slow.

That bike loved me that way. All the weaknesses and problems of Brit bikes of the era, but if it ran out of gas (no reserve tank), it was always right across the street from a gas station. If the throttle cable broke, or some minor but important part vibrated loose and fell off, it was always as I was pulling into the driveway.

I had the frame welded, and stopped the off-road riding stunts. Finally sold it. Almost 20 years later, I got the yen again, and bought a Yamaha SR-500. Sort of like a Tiger Cub that starts on the first kick, can keep up with (most) traffic, comes to a stop quickly, rides a little cushier and doesn’t need all the nuts and bolts tightened after an afternoon’s ride. The headlight actually lights things up, too. Big change from the “Lucas, Prince of Darkness” magneto electrics on the Cub.

I don’t ride it much any more. Very few empty roads to just ride and look at the scenery. Too much crazy auto traffic.

BR,

An SR500 was not my first, but it was my first nice bike. I had more fun turning it into a cafe racer. Bored and stroked that thing sounded like a tractor and would eat most 750's up. I think it ended up about 625cc's. What a great bike.

My first motorized bike was a "Peugeot 101", limited to 15 mph - with some illegal tuning, I got it to about 40 mph... Once I had my real motorcycle endorsement, a Kawasaki Z400 and then a Yamaha FJ1200, now I got something for more relaxed riding, a HD Heritage Softail Classic.

A 1975 Yamaha Enduro motor combined with a 1975 Yamaha MX frame and carburetor, and misc. parts off a Suzuki road bike. Total investment under $150. Rode the wheels, chain and sprocket off the bike until trashing it trying to replace a VERY worn crank pin. All done without any manuals, minimal tools, and I was 14. Still tinker on bikes and anything else that doesn't move, but should, to this day.

My 4 year old daughter would wait for me to come home , I would pick her up at the end of the driveway and set her between me and the gas tank and put my helmet on her head....then we would blast down the driveway as fast as that Kawasaki would go with her screaming with delight...(like it was some thrill ride at the amusement park) and come to a tire screeching halt inside the open garage ... She's over 40 now and still talks about us doing that !

Just had my little sister Rhonda, 63yo out from Tehas last summer...took her for a ride in the mountains...every time I reached into the V Rod for a little throttle she'd scream & giggle. I stopped and ask her if she was afraid...she said..."no, I just can't contain myself!"

I had a GF few years ago that did that every time I hit the throttle on my Super Glide. I LOVED IT. Wish I hadn't lost her, but it wasn't meant to be. New GF, now affianced, doesn't ride, but she's pretty darn cool despite that unfortunate omission.

I had a 305 Honda Superhawk before the 100 Enduro, but never managed to get it running. It got sold for scrap by my parents years later while I was at sea and before I figured out how to resurrect old bikes better. I still wish I could get another 305. I second those who've commented that they love the sound of a wound-out little old Honda. They were built for high RPM and love being pushed. RIP Soichiru-san.

My first bike was a 1985 Honda Shadow 500. 8-9000 rpm redline if I remember correctly and she ran like a Swiss watch right up to it. Got married and sold it. Now I ride a 200cc minibike with the kids. Fitted with a CVT, it's remarkably quick up to 25 mph or so. Pretty amazing for what amounts to a lawnmower engine. I wind it up to 5k, but with a few parts and $, people easily get 7k-8k, and some flirt with 9k, but not for long ;)

First and only motorcycle I ever rode: Harley Davidson 65cc Aermacchi Leggero, sold by HD here in the states. Can't remember the exact year of man., but around 1967 (I was 14 that year). Neighbor won it in a raffle new, but he was a severe alcoholic and never rode it, so he "gave" it to me, but kept the insurance and title on it for me to ride, along with his German WWII helmet. Never got a license to ride it, but too young anyway. I had to park it at his house next door, as my parents had a real big fit over the entire affair. I rode it for a few years, and realized I had pushed my luck as far as I could, and gave up any desire for a bigger motorcycle, having survived the horrific injuries I incurred in a car wreck as a kid.

I really enjoyed that bike. Just rode it around the area, to town and back, and stuff like that. I thought it too dangerous with such a small engine to ride in serious traffic.

So, while not true to the OP's question "What was your first motorcycle you owned", I include this as my only motorcycle I ever rode, and more to the point, the novelty of it having been a 65cc "Harley Davidson", or at least, that's what it had on the tank! Pretty sure I got the Italian company's name and model name correct. I'm sure many can concur or set me straight. I have been called out many times over the years that HD NEVER made a bike that small. This is technically correct, but they sure sold one with their name on it that was that small.

Good post... Brought many good memories of that 65cc fire breathing beast!

Gary

Had a buddy who had one of these and then the 750 version, both stupid, scary fast but an absolute blast to ride. Best ride I ever took on the 500 was late afternoon on a sunny day going north on north/south road. Full throttle acceleration up around 70 you could watch the sun shine under the front tire about 50% of the time as the front tire made contact with the road occasionally.

Wearing cutoff jeans and nothing else.

I was dumb back then.

I'm older now.

1st bike was a Yamaha GT 80, I was 13. Next was a Honda 185 twin star, I was 14. Then a 1984 750 Honda Interceptor, I was 19. From there it all went down hill, I was hooked. Started road racing & owned several roadracers, zx6, cbr f2, cbr 900rr, R1, R6, Ducati monster S4. While all that was going on, I motocrossed too, mostly endurance & cross country. Dr350 sent to Thumper racing to be a 435, ktm 300exc, wr400, cr500, 441 Victor bsa, a 76 xt500 & a 79 xt500, xr100, 69 Kawasaki bushwacker 175. At one time I had 8 motorcycles, 4 dirt, 4 street. Now I'm 48 & have slowed down some, just bought a 2016 BMW s1000r & still have the xt500's for my dirt bike fix.

Then, bought a 2005 R1. It was the first vehicle I ever bought brand new. It is still parked in my garage. I don't get out as much as I used to but still enjoy going faster than I should.

My first one is kind of embarrassing, but I bought it when I was 9 years old and thought I was king of the hill. It was a moped, I don't what actual cc it was, but you turned the throttle all the way forward to trip the decompression valve and pedaled it to get her going then hammered on the throttle to fire that baby up. I have owned a lot of them sinc, that was not quite so embarrassing. lol

I'm not sure it counts, but I had a power wheels that was stickered up to look like a CHP bike shortly after I could walk.

I remember going for little rides on the tank of my dad's Honda 750 super sport when I was little.

At some point, my brother and I were able to talk my parents into getting the Honda Z50 my cousin was selling. Back before the internet, getting parts was always tricky. My brother crashed the Z50 into a wall and we could never get spark again. These days I could go on a number of sites and have a new CDI box here in a week or so.

Next was a Suzuki DS80. Air cooled 2 stroke. Came to us with broken levers. We were able to find a brake lever but no clutch. Shops never were able to order in a clutch lever or second brake lever so I could have both. The brake lever worked upside down as a clutch. I rode a ton of miles with no front brake. That was the first one I could really see as "mine" because my brother claimed the LT80 4 wheeler that came along next.

My brother got my parents to buy him another dirt bike about the time I was in high school. It was a Yamaha TTR225. It was a 4 stroke that was a good trail bike or could've made a good enduro. But my brother wanted a high flying MX bike. It wound up sitting in the garage after a short and rough life, with it being pretty beat up from him riding it like an MX bike.

I'd come close to buying a street bike several times and really wanted a CBR600. But I lived at home, didn't make much money, and my parents were totally against street bikes.

When I was 22 I couldn't take it anymore and got my first street bike. I got a Suzuki Marauder. It was really cool for a metric. Non-bike people all thought I had a Harley fat boy. It was an 800cc v-twin. Lots of chrome, mag style wheels, and drag bars. It came already with a Corbin seat on it.

As I got comfortable street riding, I kept pushing it faster, and I soon realized that I was beyond the safe limits of those brakes and tires. I also acquired the TTR from my brother and was working on a street legal enduro conversion for it somewhere in there.

I sold the Marauder and got a brand new 2004 GSX-R 600. It was the only new vehicle I've ever owned.

I came across a deal on a 06 GSX-R 750 and picked it up. It was a project bike, but I sold the 04. Later on, I sold the 06 to have money to put towards a house. I really miss the GSX-Rs.

I picked up a DRZ-400 that was converted to supermoto. It had a different head and carbs than the one Suzuki produced as an official model later, as well as a plastic tank instead of steel. I sold it after I moved and was short on storage space.

I also got into mini racing on a Thumpstar 125. It was a Chinese built CRF clone. At the time there was a spec class where everybody was on the same make and model, with minimal mods allowed. Now that was some tight, fun racing.

I bought a Ducati 996 from my dad later on, but eventually sold it back to him. The only street bike I have left right now is a Ducati Monster S2R.

That may explain my forum handle. That and I also like cycling and mountain biking.

That's what I took my road test on, belonged to a buddy, he had bought it new and kept it in absolutely pristine condition. My Italian Harley would not pass the safety check that was required before the "road" test. No mirrors, both mufflers blown out (yes, Italian engineering at it's finest--a single cylinder with a "Y" pipe coming out of the exhaust manifold going into 2 full sized mufflers, for a 350), bent rear rim, no speedo, most of the fenders hacksawed off, no horn. But it ran.

The "road" test consisted of getting on the bike, starting it, riding about 5 parking space widths in a parking lot, doing a U-turn then coming back and stopping without falling over. But the State of Michigan has gotten my cycle endorsement fee every 3 years since.

yes they are collectable. Im friends with the son of the guy who used to be the rupp minibike/snowmobile dealership. Hes got a 5 and a 3.5 rupp mini bike restored, a 71 rupp 12.5 hp snowmobile that is absolutely like new and has one of those old (I don't remember the name) two seat side by side things that were kind of like the honda odeseys. 2x4 side by side atv for the most part. He told me he was offered 2k for his 5 hp scrambler. I took a little ride on it a few years ago to job the memories. I remember when I got it. I though I was a real bad ___ in the neighborhood until one of my buddys dads bought him a trail 70 honda. It was ok though because not long after that my dad who worked civil service at the local AFB had a GI that worked with him that was getting transferred and had that penton that he didn't want to take with him. Dad got it real cheap. I could barely touch the ground on my tippy toes when I first got it but that didn't stop me. By the way I also had a factory race rupp 440 magnum I bought off my dads buddy. It took 2nd in mod IV in eagle river the winter before I got it. Terrible tail sled but it sure made noise!!!!

First full sized bike I rode, I was probably 13, belonged to an older buddy, he was 4 years older than me. He had tons of cool stuff, his old man ran a junk yard(Automotive Salvage!, this ain't no JUNK YARD! said his dad---it was a junk yard). Jimmy was buying salvage bikes/cars before he was 16 from the salvage auctions. He went through all the Impala's when they were cool 61-66, Mustangs, Camaro's, Road Runners, Chargers, GTX's, Chevelle's, Corvette's, 750 Honda's, Sportsters, too many Z-1's too count. Yamaha Excessive 11. That was the only bike that truly scared me. Rode it twice--the second time just to make sure it really did scare me that much. It did. The road the Automotive Salvage yard was on was over two miles long of nice pavement and very little traffic. There wasn't any of Jim's toys that didn't run out of throttle before you ran out of road or nerve. Wish I had a total of the number of speedo needles that were bent on that road. It was a pretty popular stretch of road.

1999 HD Softail Custom.Still have it. My now wife showed me how to drive here 440 Kawasaki. I took it for a couple of spins then went to get a 750 Vulcan from a friend of hers that sells used. Walked in and past the Softail, backed up to look at it, pointed at it and said "I Want That One"

Had a dirt bike in the 70's but never cared for that. First road bike was a 1971 XLCH, lot of fun at the time but not now. Ended up with two old BMW R90/6's, a '74 and'76. I rode them for years and still have them but had to quit. I miss it but the way the traffic is and me getting older and slower I don't think I want to deal with it again.

1980 kz750.

owned it for about 5 minutes. Test drove it, ran fine. paid for it. Started it to drive home - and it hiccuped and caught fire. burned to the ground right in front of the three of us. prev owner was like - "bummer. sucks to be you", and left. Was not happy to say the least.

buddy had a 250 pursing. Hell of a bike till the japs started buiding dedicate mx bikes instead of modifying here street enduros. I still remember as a kid seen the bultacos and maicos and huskys dominating the tracks around home. Seems like someone through a lights switch one year and all you saw were yzs Elsinore kx's and rm's.

Harley 165 back in '62. Thought I had a real bike. Too darn old and stove up but the urge is still there. GW

I had one, when properly tuned they were very fast, on the other end of the spectrum worst brakes I’ve ever seen.

1975 Suzuki GT-550. 3 cylinder, 2 stroke. Made for the street. Fast as heck. Wish I still had it.

First was in 1964. Honda 150 Dream. Second was more exciting, Late 50's AJS 500 single. At idle you could feel the piston going up and down. Looked like this one but not as nice.240432

First bike was a Honda z50 at 4 years old, followed by about 35 dirt bikes, street and trails or dual sports. Never had enough sense to own a street bike and I’m sure I’d still ride it like an idiot if I had one now.

My first a 350 Honda, my last a 750 Triumph Trophy. The Trump is in pieces in my attic and maybe my nephews attic or in the barns attics in the farm I had in the 80's.

I stopped riding in the early 80's after responding in the large metropolitan city I was a professional FF in to a hundred or so accidents involving MC.

Training in survival [in my trade] made me quit. Riding was fun but not worth the consequences to me. I got enough adrenaline rushes at work to affect my health. I did not need to seek any other ones.

1958 J-Be, a 125cc Sachs engined West German street bike imported by Berliner Motors. Passed down by my brother in 1960 when he got his drivers license.

IIRC I saw one of the Kawa 750 3cyl 2 strokes set up as a drag or fast street machine. Very low built with pipes that must have come off a diesel rig. Really large dia front forks but no wheely bar. Cowel and headlight so must have been street legal. Kinda layed on it vs sitting. Called the mean green machine. Always thought the Norton 500TT was the best but younger bro had a 60's era Atlas - he said it was a 850. Ran it into the back of a PU truck. Got an Alfa 1600 sprint with dual webers. I tried fixing the dist. as he didn't turn the grease cup on it. Marelli is EXPENSIVE. He had troubles with it and mech. tried to fix it, dropped the cam chain into the pan so Dad said sell the thing.

Had a friend (good rider) that tried the Suzuki rotary. Went a ways, turned it off and pushed it back to the dealer - way too fast for him. I tried the V4 Honda but it was too tall for my short legs. Probably too fast for me too.

My first purchase was a Honda CL175 (if I don't count the various mini-bikes and Mopeds I borrowed from friends). My last was a Harley Sportster, 1974 year model. When SWMBO announced that we were starting a family, I sold the Harley and used the proceeds to install central H&A in our home. Good investment, and haven't looked back into bikes since then. That was 39 years ago.

I remember when I first saw one of those. Probably the strangest sounding motor cycle ever. Suzuki sure wasn't afraid to try weird things. How about the water buffalo. First liguid cooled 2 stroke motorcycle. I often wonder today with the high tech direct injection 2 stroke snowmobiles and outboards why someone has tried the 2 stroke thing again on big street bikes. the snowmobiles and outboards are clean burning get good fuel economy and last a long time and do it shedding about 50-100 lbs. I could see a crotch rocket with a direct injected v4.

1975 Kawasaki KZ400 twin.
The previous owner rebuilt the engine and removed the counter balance weights on the crankshaft. It ran great but my oh my did that thing vibrate as the RPMs increased.

When I was about 10-11 there was a guy in the neighborhood people called Doc, he was probably already in his late 50's and he had the only dune buggy that I ever seen back then. One day I was at his garage and seen a old motorcycle without a engine and asked him about it. He told me it was a 1937 Simplex ??? He sold it to me cheap, I can't remember what I paid but it had just about everything except the engine. I wanted to put a real motorcycle engine on it but my dad knew I was to young and would hurt myself if I had any real power. I ended up putting on a B&S horizonal shaft lawn mower engine probably 3 HP, and drove it with a leather belt to the rear wheel.
That bike was pretty heavy, it had large foot pads , leg bars , a pedal rear brake and a big gas tank with dual filling caps. Top speed was probably about 15 mph but it as the coolest bike any kid in my neighborhood had. I don't even remember now where it went but I bought my first car at 15 and probably didn't care much about it then. It would probably be worth some good money now if I still had it.
