Lyman M die

I just realized I do not have a M-Die for the 41 mag...

I have searched a few sites and I dont seem to find one offered! Can this be right?

Does anyone have a 41 mag M-Die?

I see the 40/65 @ .413, but isnt that too long for the shorter 41 mag case?

Lyman's multi-expander & powder charge die has (had?) an expander in .41 as part of the $40 kit. After the third time my expander plug backed out on my M-die during a long reloading session, I went with the NOE expander plugs.

They have made them at some point, I have one. Would not load cast without it.

Always apply Loc-Tite to the M-Die expander, after cleaning with a good solvent. They don't back out after that.

They are designed to be used in a Lee expander die. They work very well I have them in a number of different sizes.

If you want a dedicated built to your spec M-style die contact CH4D, I've had them make me a have dozen for stuff that was too big for the Lee/NOE plugs to work--think 416 Rigby, 470 Nitro Express kind of cases. Those monsters just won't fit in the Lee expander die.

Not sure why it is called an M die. It is an expander that extends into the case and has a step rather than a funnel shape to open the case mouth. They are perfect for loading cast bullets at around .001 or so bigger than jacketed bullets. You also have great control over the depth of that expansion.

Used to expand/bell the case neck to make seating cast boolits easier, most 3 die pistol sets the second die is the "M" die.

Don't have a clue where the name "M die" came from, probably it was on a parts list somewhere as Part M, from my understanding that is where the "H&I" sizer nomenclature came from on Lyman sizers--some parts catalog had them identified as parts H and parts I on some parts illustrations.

If someone knows the actual story I'd love to hear it, if not my made up reason is probably as good as any[smilie=l:

Notice the steps. I usually try to hit the B stage. This works the brass much less at the case mouth, the extended point preps the case for the bullet to be inserted and does not compress the bullet as much either. With expensive or rare brass these will extend case life! The other benefit is that bullets placed by hand tend to stand straight and tall, less chance of damage during seating.

NOE makes a similar expander, I think it goes into the Lee universal expander die. I have not used them, but would not hesitate to use them as Al always makes a good product.

The 1978 catalog shows the sizing/decapping die as a W die, the seating die as a U die, and the the two step neck expanding die as the M die in the 2 and 3 die rifle sets. Pistol sets were the same except that the sizing/decapping dies were designated as YD.

Thinking about it, Im pretty sure I also have the LEE expander die now too. I dont use itso kinda forgot about it . Yes I also now remember being told the NOE expanders work in the LEE. Thank you! Thats likely why I bought it just never followed thru with NOE.

My first two die sets were .30-06 and .30 carbine, the latter included the M expander. On a whim, I eventually tried the M on the big case for jacketed bullets. That worked so well - very easy "straight in" seating starts and finished low bullet run-out - I have M dies (or a home lathe duplicated expander) for every cartridge I load for.

If you have a lathe you can easily make your own custom M-die mandrels from 9/16 - 18 Grade B7 threaded rod.

Steel is supplied at Rockwell C 35, which has proven quite adequate. Since the thread and the mandrel are one piece, loosening-up is never a problem.
