So as the title says, I am looking for some 300 Blackout data. But I feel the need to bring forth a little history... About 3 years ago, I was still living in Colorado and at the time it was a great time to be a shooter. Powder and primers everywhere, plenty of places to shoot etc... Then the Army decided it was NOT time for me to retire and sent me to New York- the exact opposite for a shooter. I couldn't bring any of my pistols, AR's or anything over 50 caliber. So I sold a few guns and went about my business. While in the "Peoples Republic of New York", I never busted a primer on one of my guns- not one in 3 years! It was way too much of a PITA. So I retired, and here I am back in Colorado. I have burned through at least 2K rounds of 45ACP since I have been back. It has been great! Now on to the real question...

I decided to build another AR, and this one will be my "house gun" in the form of a 10" barreled 300 blackout. I still have all my molds, dies, brass and powders so I am going to get after it. But I was in a gun shop today, and I saw a can of Hodgdon CFE BLK and the label said it was specifically formulated for subsonic loads. Woah, I have been away for a bit... My favorite loads were built on AA1680 and LilGun back in the day, and apparently I have missed some things. I have 2 Lee molds, the 155gr .312" and 230gr .308" which were my favorite. Any suggestions for a 10.5" barrel vs the 16" I used to have?

BTW, It's GOOD TO BE BACK!!!

Burn rate of 1680 and CFE Black is nearly the same and you’ll notice load data overlaps as well. Lots of info out there about these two powders. You won’t see as drastic a difference in velocity change from 10-16 as you see in the 223. Load some up and try them out. I’ve found the 110gr VMax works wonderfully with a 20gr 296 and has been my go to for years.

Stick with the 1680. I use a 145gr in my 10" pistol, H110/296 works fine. No subs here. Playing with a 170 PB that works too.

I use 10 grains of CFEBLK under a 230 grain NOE for 1000fps. Quiet and accurate.

Check out load data for the 300 whisper load, basically the same cartridge. Was very popular for our 200 meter IHMSA sport in the late 90's. Low recoil in the 10'' thru the 15'' Contender pistols. Heavy cast bullets from 170 to 200 gr. would reliably knock over the rams.

I use H110 for 150 grn Lee and 700x, TB for the 230 grainers

From what I’ve read the big benefit of the CFE BLK is much lower pressure for the same velocities from similar powders.

IMHO, you can do about anything needed in the lil 300 with two powders. The clones 296/H110 and 1680. CFE BLK is a upstart. Does nothing 1680 cannot but cost ya more.

Saying that, I do very much like 4227 in mine too! :-P

I have been hunting deer with mine since 2011. Its taken dozens between my buddie and I. Its a short range proposition, but thats what we see here 98% of the time. We mostly use one load. A 125 SST & H110 Powder for about 2300 fps. I have used most every bullet applicable at least once. All worked some better then others. Some I wont use again.

I still have t shot the Hornady 135FTX designed for the blk. I have a couple boxes, just have t tried it yet. I did try the Speer 150 Gold dot also designed for the littlest 300 and its a WINNER! Sub MOA, right at 2K and mushrooms like it is expected too. Only one deer so far, but there was a dime going in and nearly a 1” exit. Expiration was quick and dropped in site of the stand. Ill be using more as I like a heavier bullet. 1680 is ALMOST doable for everything but with the 110 & 125 the twins are better for velocity.but from 150+ 1680 is all ya need.

I shoot allot of 4227 and a 147 pull fmj as a fun round. These shoot sub moa in three of mine! Plus they are almost as cheap as cast. Speaking of cast. They are a dissapointment in my guns. Regardless if much effort I cannot get good accuracy. 1” @ 50 has been the best. From a gun that can shoot 1/4-3/8” with J supers thats dismal.

Good luck. Its a great and fun caliber!

Welcome Home Neighbor. I don't have a Blackout, I assembled a 7.62X40 instead cause I had no desire to go subsonic. Still fire forming brass with any 150g projectile I can get my hands on. Taking my time, enjoying the ride. Haven't seen any CFE BLK around here so I'll keep looking. Good Luck !

Once again, I am in complete agreement with popper
1680 and an 8.5" barrel, what's 1.5" among friends
That is all you need

My son put one together and loves it. I've been out of touch somewhat, but the last time I went to the range there was a young man and his female companion shooting one at the end of the bench from me, maybe 30 feet or so away. I didn't realize the round was so "intense" for lack of a better word....

I heart the .300 Blackout cartridge. It's a .30 cal bullet dispose-all! Any j- bullet on the shelf. I haven't had much luck with cast in mine accuracy wise.

That's what my son said. If it's a 30 Cal bullet there's a published load for it.

Hey guys,
Don't forget Shooters World Blackout, made by Lovex! It is in the same class as AA1680 and CFE BLK and sometimes you can find it on sale. I have heard but I don't know, that at one time AA1680 was the same powder as Blackout. In my experience it is just as good and when 1680 was hard to find I tried it out and have been using it ever since.

Best advice I have seen yet from the post above. Two powders to have on hand; 1680 and W296/H110. If they wont do it something is wrong with your rifle.
