is this a super turret? the base seems to heavy to be aluminum but it is not magnetic. I've only tested it with a weak refrigerator magnet. the weight of it in total as shown in the pics is just shy of 33 lbs.239339239340239341

sorry about the pics being sideways.

Well, that is not a Senior turret as I thought, in the PM. It is a Model III. The aluminum frame version which came out in 1953, production stopped in 1958 when a new line of presses came out in 1959.

As is very typical of these presses most of the paint has flaked off.

Your press is set-up for loading shotgun shells, thus the shot and powder measures. These have the solid drum so are later models.

It is a nice, and very complete press. Cleaned of rust and not repainted it is very usable for cartridge reloading. Shot reloading is limited to the old fashioned paper hull shells and is a slow process.

Aaronvet77 Welcome to CB there are very few reloading questions that someone on CB can't answer.

Wow, has that press been neglected. But soaking the steel parts in citric acid will get rid of all the rust. Prime and paint the aluminum, and it will be as good as new.

Here is an iron one after cleaning and polishing:

And a Super Turret on the left for comparison:

Idk... this thing is massive... its 19" from the base to the tip of dome in middle. and it weighs 33lbs. from the base to the top of highest powder measure is 3 feet exactly.

Just remember that the powder measures did not come with the press.. most powder measures and such can be mounted to any press, so prolly can’t add the extra height of the powder measures to the press heigth...

ya but, the one you have pictured on far left has the primer seater or whatever it is and then the shell holder, like what mine has. the one you have pictured next to white wall has only shell holder and looks...a little smaller. Im almost positive this is a super turret not a model III, I will take a few better pictures.

Well, one thing to remember, the super turret press has way more real estate on the top where dies fit in.. take a pic of the top of the press... like this... might want to put a tape measure across the top in the picture for reference.

Take a look at these photo’s.. I have circled the important pieces...

First 2 pics are your press, and your new pictures verify this..
239384 239385

See how the top of your press is kind of domed in shape?

Now, look at these pictures... look at the parts in the red circle..

239386 239387

See how the larger press has a disk like top, not a dome on top of the turret? The super has the disk that is not a dome. And the diameter of the super’s turret is more then 12 inches.

It would be very awesome if it was a super, but what you have is also cool, and a great part of reloading history. It has value as well, just not as much as a super.

Blessings sir.

lol is that photoshopped!

No, that is not photoshoped. Your press is a Model III, it is not a Super turret.

Not photo shopped.. just screen captures to try to help you see the differences... not the first time this question has come up around here. Remember, you have found a cool piece of history. If you are just interested in making money off it, will still do very well I am sure...

Ok, I see the difference now, someone had emailed me and explained in a way that helped me out (I'm hard headed).

If the aluminum casting is stripped of the old paint it can be chem filmed per MIL-C-5541.
The chem film is a chromate conversion coating and is the military standard paint base for aluminum.
Paint will not flake off of the chem film like it does with the raw untreated castings.

Does the Super Turret have 3 turrets or just one like the Senior Turret? My Senior Turret with a few parts had a shipping weight of 70 lbs.

If you look at the pics, you will see three turrets: for the dies, for the shell holders, and for the primer arms.

You have a Hollywood Turret Tool, it says it right in the casting on one side.
Pretty nice press, I sure like mine.

Does anyone know how many super turrets were made ?

I have an original letter from the president of one of the handful of Hollywood Companies that states only 100 were made.
