I have a marlin 45-70 and bought a bunch of cast flat base 500 grain bullets and am looking for some loading information, anyone have any tested loads?

I've used a duplex load of 5gr Unique and 50gr 2F black with a Rapine 500gr cast in Trapdoors with great success over the years. The Unique makes the black burn completely, leaving a much cleaner casing to deal with at the end. I've tried some smokeless loads, but they just seem wrong...They didn't shoot bad, they just didn't have the BOOM that I love so! :drinks:

69daytona, make shure that when the boolit is crimped that it does not exceed the OAL for the marlin. Most of the 500 grainers are made for single shot rifles. I have one made by RCBS for my 1895 Marlin in 45-70.

Is that a custom one from RCBS? I remember the first time I loaded for an 1895, jammed it up good, I stripped the rifle carefully and no way would that mag tube cap come off. No amount of fiddling, belting it with a nylon or lead hammer, cussing swearing, struggling would budge the sucker! Did i mention that I held my hand over the offending part the whole time in case it flew off? Wellllllllllllllll, finally I surrendered, slumped back on my favourite old stool, took my hand off the end of the mag tube and POW! the nasty lil part fired off int the biggest pile of clutter in an extremely cluttered garage, isn't it always the way? I clered the rifle, stuck the follower and spring back in the mag tube, stuck it in the safe and left it there for a few months till I finally cleaned up enough to find it (I used a sieve).

Needless to say I'm reallllllllllllllllllllll careful about overall length now in 1895s.

4fingermick, the boolit is a standard RCBS #82236 45-500 FN. It measures 1.300 Long and .420 from top of crimp groove to the nose of the boolit and a .300 diameter nose. If your case is 2.105 + .420 for the boolit nose your OAL will be 2.525 which will function in a marlin . Mine weigh 525grs with 30:1 alloy out of the mould. Here is a picture of it.
