Good day to all members. I hope this thread will be acceptable to the Mods and members since this is a type of hunt that I am sure is something you all will appreciate.
It is 1884 in the ZAR. The little Boer republic is 30 years old, recognized by the treaty of London in 1854.
Yes there was that unfortunate interlude of British rule from '77 to '81, but that misunderstanding was clarified at Majuba on 27 February 1881.
Now the flag of the ZAR is flying in Pretoria.

But that is all politics. On the farms around Pretoria some farmers are making ready for their winter hunt in the Waterberg about 100 miles to the north. Gert, Greg and Johan are from Pretoria district.
From the town of Nijlstroom come Herman, Hansie and Willie.
Then there is the Reverend Jaap from the kalahari-desert who is always trying to keep his countrymen civilized - even when they are out hunting.
There under an old camel thorn tree they camp with their wagons, and hunt for meat. They are joined by some friends from the southern sister republic - "De Oranje Vrijstaat" MC, Swannie and Max.
Among the Free staters there is David, a lonely Englishman from Bloemfontein - he has made the Free state his home and befriended the Boers - finding them quite hospitable. This year the group is joined by Georg, an Austrian-Bavarian adventurer hunting in Africa.
Then of course there are two hunters from the Cape Colony - Wallace and Clieve.

The area around the camp abound with Impala, warthog, bushbuck and kudu. Animals are hunted, carried to camp, and processed into biltong - dried meat- which will be taken back to their home farms.

The hunters use a variety of rifles:
The new 450-577 Martini-Henry, the most modern military rifle introduced to the British empire 8 years before.
The Westley-richards monkeytail - trusted rifle among many boers in the fighting at Majuba 3 years ago. Shooting rolled paper cartridges, it can be used as a muzzle loader in a pinch, should you run out of rolled cartridges.
Some boers stil prefer their muzzle loading percussion rifles, and one of them uses a giant 6-bore flintlock.
There is talk of a fancy 11 mm German turnbolt rifle that Georg will be bringing.
Wallace from the Cape brings a lovely bespoke gun - a handmade hunting rifle - the calibre i am uncertain of.

Members as you may see, we are the lucky owners of a time machine that takes us back about 130 years for a traditional hunt. This is the same hunt that gert Odendaal had been telling you about for the last four years.

For some or other reason Gert has failed to start a thread on this year's hunt, so I am helping him out.

I hope he will soon help us out with lots of photos.

Members here is a report of our actual Black Powder hunt of 1885 in the year of 2019:
Georg and Elfriede Poppel accompanied me to Weltevreden to participate in the Black Powder hunt. We arrived at the gate of Weltevreden farm on the Saturday during midday on a hot sun shining down on us.

Johan Greyling already arrived with the freight ox wagon at the camp, we had some damage on the canvas covering the ox wagon , this year the ox wagon was a great feature as a kitchen storage surface...An extremely important issue we all gave a lot of attention to is to eradicate all plastic and new world pollution in the camp...all containers not conforming to our requirements of vintage /historical point of views..

Oh, what sweet memories this calls up. The thought of a cup of coffee while watching the sunrise listening to doves calling makes me want to go back and take one of my black powder era doubles to stalk the Mopane and wait-awhile thorn for buffalo. Once you experience Africa you're forever changed, it is always there calling to you.

A video about moments around the camp fire cooking food:

https://youtu.be/OYpLy-zCwXQ

Ludi , his son Duan really are an asset on such a hunt, Ludi , hunter from the far North brought a lot of proviand, pots, utensils and a lot of great items that assisted us around the fire while making food...here is a video of Ludi making a great pot of "pap" ...

https://youtu.be/wYCqAeXYwMA

we really are trying very hard to get rid of pollution in our camp. I think we made great progress in this regards..(y)(y) I want to build a few items that is not possible to get hold of in an original form..like the pans they used in that era...another item I saw worked great was the folding chair that Hansie made from an original folding chair the Boer hunters made themselves ...the most interesting was the Whips Hansie Minnaar splice from raw leather thongs he made himself...(y)(y)(y)

Another activity that we also can not be without is the delicious bread Johan Greyling is baking. I can assure you it really is hard and hot work ...here is some photos as well as a video to underscore my statement...
The young hunters dug the oven in the river bank:

Making food , open fire camp food making processes are diverse as the hunters in a camp. We as South Africans , the farming community , hunters learned the art of camp fire cooking from our parents. Usually you will find in a South African household the man of the house will be the cook...we still are learning from the old people who really was great cooks around campfires...some photos of this activity in camp:
Willie Barnard is one of the best open fire cooks I have met, he really has great insight in what types of meat will combine to make a great dinner..here he used two fat sheep ribs around a Impala leg ...added onions, carrots , spices to create a delicious dinner:

Containing /eradicating modern pollution:
As pointed out previously, we really try hard to eradicate plastic/modern items in our camp..we were fortunate in receiving a lot of hessian bags to store modern items out of view.Dr. Wallace Vosloo donated a lot of these great hessian bags to our camp box.Another strategy is to store proviand in bottles as well as in wooden crates.
Making copies from original items is another method to minimise pollution in the camp

Since the date of our hunt had to be moved to an earlier time , we experienced extremely hot days , fortunately the evenings cooled down and the night temperatures were cooler. Due to this scenario we did not hunt any warthogs , since their meat will spoil . We made use of "mutton cloth" to cover the carcasses as soon as it was processed ..this really ensured our meat did not spoil. The processing of the carcasses were done early morning am later in the evenings. We succeed in hunting Impala as well as kudu ...

Hansie Minnaar as always , never disappoint with his ideas ..he brought his two donkeys again to assist with retrieving game that was shot.

https://youtu.be/meZUIu0dUzA

Georg, who participated in this hunt as well really was a great asset in regards to educate us in reloading techniques with the most basic equipment. He spend a lot of time training and educating the youngsters to re-load...

It really was a great privilege to have Georg and his wife Elfriede Poppel join us on this hunt. Our appreciation goes as well to Volkmar and his wife Renate who really was a great asset on this hunt..the women was always without question available to assist in the kitchen en around the cooking pots...(y)(y)(y)

One of our members MC Heunis went with Georg Poppel to hunt for Impala and Kudu. Here is some videos of how we approach game when hunting and more video material of how we stalk when we hunt with muzzle loader and black powder rifles..since we do not shoot longer shots than fifty meters when we have a clear view on the vitals of a Impala or Kudu.

Important rules of the hunt:
No shots further than fifty meters.
All hunting stops when an animal is wounded , all members look for and track the wounded animal.
Since every hunter hunts alone /with a fellow hunter we need hunters to be honest when they shot at game , when wounded , report back to the camp immediately.
Shooting at the range:
Our main sponsor for all black powder used in this hunt was provided by Johan Greyling who makes excellent high quality Black powder. Johan Greyling is the only licences manufacturer of high quality black powder in South Africa ...he caters only for hunters and black powder front loader canon owners.

The next photo will explain how important ZAR black powder is for the hunters in the 1885 Era hunting camp.
Georg Poppel, our German/Austrian hunter who participated in the hunt managed to get hold of two containers of ZAR high quality black powder...he was really reluctant to let go of these two containers we needed for re-loading in camp..

Meat processing:
Due to extremely high day temperatures all meat processing was done in the early mornings or late afternoons . We did not hunt any warthog due to considerable possibilities of meat that would spoil .
All meat /carcasses are de-boned /cut into biltong by Willie Barnard. All cut off pieces , not suitable for biltong is being process by me with assistance from fellow hunters we grind the meat to use as a mince dish for camp food. The rest I use for making venison sausage or wilds wors as it is known in Afrikaans.
Every body assist to process meat in the camp as well..

Willie uses the skin of the slaughtered animal to cure the biltong in it for twelve hours. Then the biltong is hung to dry in the shade...

Members, I need to point out , the exceptional videos were taken by my good friend Georg Poppel, he really did a splendid job, we would not have all these great videos if it was not for Georg...he even had time to sit and rest..man he is good...:LOL::LOL::LOL:(y)(y)(y)

In regards to the type of hunting we need to do when hunting with the old rifles, here is a video of how near you need to get for a shot , even this distance is too far, as a hunter you need to get closer ...this year was more difficult to get very close to the game..the wind patterns/directions changed around all day...

Photo of the Impala shot during the hunt, notice the carcass hanging and covered with mutton cloth..this is to ensure no flies lay eggs on the meat...

So much AWESOME!!! Please tell me about that mauser looking rifle!

I received this Mauser 1871 / 1888 sporting rifle from a friend who bought it long ago from a general in the South African army...my German friend Georg Poppel who participated in the hunt pointed out that this is a rifle he had never seen in Germany and Austria..he is not able to tell me about this rifle and I am not able to find any photos ot information about this rifle...I really would appreciate it very much if someone can give me information about this rifle...it is a Mauser 43 /11.15 x 60R ...but I am not able to find any photos of such a rifle on the Internet..it was in a poor condition and the stock was broken..I retore it as proper as possible..

That is excellent!! I am beginning to love the Mauser 11.15x60r. I currently have two sitting on the kitchen table that I am playing with. One is sporterised and the other original. Once I decide the better of the two for my hunting needs, I want to really sport it up.

Members I really am appreciating the positive replies , it really is much appreciated. I have currently two Mauser 43 rifles , I am thinking to sell one for money I can use on a current project...Both rifles are in great condition and was standing for forty years in a rifle safe...I am currently purchasing all available brass I can get...I really want to use it this year for a normal hunting trip ..the Mauser 43 I post about...I really still will appreciate it if someone can give me more info about this rifle????
Any one is more than welcome to participate in this hunt..This year Georg Poppel and his wife joined the hunt , I believe he said there is nowhere in the world such a hunt and such a experience..he already booked for next year...There is a possibility that we can hunt on a farm alongside the Kruger National park..no fences between the farm and the Kruger National park..so we have to be content with buffalo, Lions and elephants crossing your path while you hunt...if there are enough hunters who want to attent such a hunt we can compile a hunt that they can participate in such a hunt..

Gert,

I salute you and your folks for all you have done here! First to conduct such a hunt in the first place and second to go to the work of documenting it and third going to the additional effort to share it here on this forum. What a treat!

I hope that all you kind salt of the earth folks are able to do this activity in perpetuity in your country you love so very much.

God bless and good hunting

Holymoly, I really regret that I did not put more effort into joining in on this hunt, but I donÂ’t have enough old stuff to qualify anyhow....

Maybe next time....

Thanks for the post

Regards

Ferdi

(Ps, I forgot to mention that I don’t walk deliciously because I forspouted my single and hit my skinnymare on a carrot of a tree while having to crawl in to the hole of an ironpig attempting to hide from a angry hunting lazy horse that thought I wanted to have her smalls, on a camel horse hunt because the **** patrons of my double walk hail gun failed to go off....)

Members, you are more than welcome to participate in these hunts ..I invited a German, Georg Poppel and he said it was a great adventure , his wife accompanied him and she loved it...

Members, I am looking for six Black Powder hunters who want to participate in such a hunt as seen in this thread. It will be in 2023, during the first two weeks of May 2023. Please let me know if there are members who are interested in such a hunt, there will be Buffalo available to hunt as well.
