I have a neck sizing die in 308 caliber; can I use the same die to neck size some 7.62 x 39 brass?

The 7.62 is a .311 bullet and I would think a .308 neck size die would make the neck way too tight but then again, I never tried it. james

Rough check to see. Set a 308 and 7.62 X 39 on a flat surface and see where the neck on the 7.62 x 39 falls in relation to the 308. may be to short to get into the neck any amount. Then what is your 7.62 set up for in bullet dia .312 or .308? If neck die is a bushing die then a bushing change may be needed other wise a larger neck expander and more work on the case opening up.

My 7.62 x 39 is .308 . I'll try the set up and see if the die will work with the shorter cases. I guess I could use a extended shell holder.

The shell holder takes 1/8" from each case whether extended or not. the issue is the die is set up for 308 win ( also known as 7.62X51) Your 7.62 X 39 may not be long enough to reach the neck of the die. 51mm = 2.007 long, 39mm =1.535 long a difference of .472 in length between the 2 cases. The extended shellholder will raise the case up but the difference above the shellholder will be the same.

You will not be able to use a 308 win neck die without cutting about 1/2" off the bottom of the die. The start of the 308 win neck is 1.7118" from the base. The entire case length of the 7.62x39 is only 1.528" long.

You will be almost 0.2" short from the neck even being able to start entering the neck portion of the sizer.

Sorry, but it's a no-go.
