Stopped by a local reloading store run by a shooting buddy to drop off a few pints of honey from my bee yard. While there he pulled two boxes out from under the cash register and asked if I was interested in any of the stuff in them. Well he had eight unopened 1 lb jugs of Pyrodex along with another 6 cans of the holy black ranging from 1F down to a unopened can of 4F. Four cans of the holy black were made by Gearhart-Owen along with two cans of Hodgdon. One can had a price tag of $2.95 which really dates the stuff. Not sure about the Pyrodex but the black powder made my day. :)

Not bad! I love it when I run into deals like that and try to keep my composure until I leave the building.

Too old for that, maybe a happy hobble ;)

Already stashed the loot in the shop.

Hodgdon used to make holy black? Or did I misunderstand?

Here are some pictures of the Hodgdon BP. It is labeled made in Scotland, go figure.

I'm starting to wonder just how old those two cans are. I tested a pinch of powder and it lit up just fine. ;)

I still have 4 cans of powder that I brought from California 25 years ago, and had it for at least ten years in California.
The stuff still shot great last year.
I couldn't tell much difference from New powder and the old stuff when I shot up the two other cans that I had.

I read that one of the old powder companies kept a large quantity of powder in water. When they would make a new batch, they would dry some of the saved powder and use it to test the new to make sure it came up to standards. Believe it was in Muzzle Blasts.

I believe that's smokeless, not the Holy Black.
