It looks like casting boolits for an AR15 not common...anyone had success? Is it the gas operation or the semi action that is the problem? I would imagine you could get around the velocity issue by using gc's... I considered swaging or the 22rf case thing but with time I already spend casting/reloading, I want to leave some time for the actual shooting. Anyone?

Most AR twists are too quick for cast bullets, they even destroy 50 grain varmint bullets. If you want to shoot cas in it, get a 12 inch twist barrel.

I bought a mold 55gr GC made about 500 boolits loaded 20 up to check the load. Went to range set up. Fired 3 rounds at 50yds grouped at 1/2 in fired 3 more group was 1 1/2 fired 3 more group was 4 to 5in . These were loaded at the low start load. Took 3 hours to clean the lead out of the barrel. SOLD the mold. scrounger is right

ANY semi-auto can be made to fire cast boolits accurately (within the capabilities of the particular rifle) so long as the boolit is sized correctly for that rifles' bore, the alloy is sufficiently hard and the velocity is kept within the limits of the alloy and boolit's finished hardness with respect to the rifling twist. The one drawback is that the load may not have sufficient port pressure to operate the action semi-automatically. In other words, you may end up with a "pump action" that requires you to work the bolt manually for each shot. Personally, I don't have a problem with this because, as a handloader, I hate chasing and losing brass from semi's.

If you want full-power loads for your AR, stick to jacketed.

These groups were fired yesterday with my RRA LAR 15 varmit with 1 in 12 twist and the RCBS 22-055 checked and sized @ .225 then oven HT'ed @ 425° for 1 hour and ice water quinched.
This AR is new and has a total of 98 rounds thru it, all with the RCBS, it wares a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18 Mil dot. All rounds were loaded from the mag and functioned the action very well. RRA garanties 1.5 min accuracy with condoms so I think I did pretty good with a couple of 1.75 groups
Weather conditions was blue bird skys, a light wind @ 10mph or less and air temp about 75°

Group below is with 17.0 AAC 2015BR 15 rounds, the shot at the lower left was from a clean cold barrel

Keep us posted on how things go. I am to worried about plugging the gas tube with lead to try it.
Still working on the ole M1. Seem easyer to take apart to clean.

I don't have a problem shooting cast in my 1 in 9" Savage.:-D
